The age concession: a crisis of conscience

To start a new thread or tack onto one already there? Oh well, here is my three ha'porth anyway:- It has rightly been stated that those who don't like the proposed loss of the old age concession can vote against the motion. Quite so, but it poses a personal ethical difficulty. You see, I have this a...

Re: ...why indexing isn't done by the derailleur?

... Rohloff cables don't have to get very bad before the shift feels terrible for similar reasons. ... cheers My experience with Rohloff kit has been distinctly more positive. Admittedly it's only one bike, but I've had it for 15 years and done around 75k miles on it with only one change of gear ca...

Re: A worrying thought about hand signals

Much more worrying to me is the habit/convention that group cyclists have of waving an arm out to indicate a pothole or whatever, meaning "avoid whatever is under my hand", which is pretty much the opposite of "I am going to turn that way". It is often ambiguous even to those in ...

Re: Brake squeal: another(?) dodge

IIRC Deore V brakes have integral pivot bushings; it wouldn't be expected that winding PTFE tape around the bosses would make any difference to squealing, except in brakes where the brake arm rotates directly against the boss. cheers Mmm... I can only say that on a previous occasion (with different...

Re: Brake squeal: another(?) dodge

maybe I'm being a bit dense but I had to read the above twice before I was reasonably sure that it referred to a rim brake of some kind, probably a canti or V brake? It might be worth mentioning which exact model of brake you have? When it comes to squealing brakes it is a lot like black magic some...

Brake squeal: another(?) dodge

I've seen a good few tricks for curing brake squeal before now, but not this one. I admit that doesn't mean it's not known, but perhaps an airing of it may help someone somewhere. While scratching my head after all of the many tricks I knew failed and my latest set of pads still squealed, the light ...

Re: Watford to Isle of Wight Ride!

A word of caution about this one: 1. (The best, imho.) Head South along the river Meon... From Titchfield south and then east, this is a reasonable route (and this may be what Tony means). But in case you were thinking of applying the advice to "head south along the Meon" north of the M27...

Re: Watford to Isle of Wight Ride!

There a two good routes to the Portsmouth ferry terminal if you have time, both distinctly pleasanter than ploughing through the middle of Portsmouth, which is pretty horrid, cycle paths or no and whichever cycle path. In both cases use a good map. 1. (The best, imho.) Head South along the river Meo...

Re: Numb hands

An anecdote: Some time back (oh, c.20yrs) I was suffering badly with numb hands, but only on some bikes. I tried all the usually touted things, such as gel mittens, various bar wrappings, different bars and adjusting the riding position. They all helped a little, but still some bikes provoked the pr...

Re: two brakes, one lever - is it legal?

This thread has moved on apace, whereas there are many other distractions in my life (yes, really!), but in answer to questions about my failing two-cable lever - Firstly, it was a long time ago, I abandoned that arrangement soon after acquiring it, and my memory is dim, but the lever did look like ...

Re: two brakes, one lever - is it legal?

I am no expert on legality, and of limited technical prowess, but can offer an anecdote that could be food for thought. Some good few years ago I acquired third hand a Dawes Supergalaxy tandem. It was standard for its (long gone) day, having rim brakes front and rear operated by the left hand with a...

Re: Chain lubricant!

I'm not sure if I have been doing the wrong thing for years in using fairly standard products and allowing the chain to wear to it's limits then spending £10-15 on a replacement. Is all of the boiling, ultrasonic cleaning etc required in order to keep a chain running without wear for as long as pos...

Re: Isle of Wight route advice for 2 day not-too-challenging ride

Writing as one who lives on the Island, roams it regularly, and also cycles for shopping etc - I wouldn't really quarrel with anything already said, but in the summer holiday season the main roads are just horrid, and best avoided where possible. "Main" mostly includes B-roads, too. Out of...

Re: Inherited Rohloff Very loud

Further to the discussion about leaks and seals, I thought it might be useful to post this extract from a note issued by Thorn Cycles in 2005: Note #4 - Despite what may be written in the manuals, Rohloff aim to put about 20ml [on average] of oil into the factory-filled hubs. Of this, around 12ml wi...

Re: Black ice

Black ice is horrid. It occurs when supercooled water droplets, be they rain or mist, come into contact with the road surface (or any other surface) and instantly solidify. "Supercooled" means still liquid but below freezing point, an unstable state that reverts to solid at the least provo...
