Re: Quiet site near Loch Ness

I thought the Camping and Caravan Club had a special rate for "backpackers" that also applied to touring cyclists? I'm sure I've used that on the site at Poolewe a couple of years ago. Thought it was good value and they had great facilities for washing clothes etc.(Though you may not need ...

Re: Solar panels

I'm considering getting one. I carry a powerbank and use this to charge my Garmin and phone, but I tend to wild camp a fair bit (the occasional lunch stop may give me chance to grab some sort of charge, but most places I visit don't seem to have charging facilities), so there is the problem of charg...

Re: Cafes & Routes around Middleton in Teesdale

Unfortunately we go home Friday! Got out yesterday and did a loop around the reservoirs south of Middleton and then looped out towards Stanhope. and on to Newbiggin. Oh my the wind! At times I was struggling to keep on the road, and had to pedal pretty hard downhill just to make headway! Wonderful c...

Re: Cafes & Routes around Middleton in Teesdale

Brilliant thanks! Now all we need is for the forecast for sleet and high winds to be wrong!

Cafes & Routes around Middleton in Teesdale

So for the next week we are based in Middleton in Teesdale and looking forward to exploring the area (assuming Storm Freya does not get too bad!). Can anyone recommend any good cafes and/or routes for us to try?

Re: Orkney ferries - North Ronaldsay

Yes that's what I was thinking of doing. When I get chance I'll give them a call to find out if/when the Sunday excursions will run, unless anyone here happens to know!

Re: Orkney ferries - North Ronaldsay

I really want to spend a night camping on the island as I think that is the best way of getting to know a place. Three nights might be fun, but I don't think I'll have the time for that, which is why I am looking at other options. Places like this can really get under your skin. I've spent a lot of ...

Re: Orkney ferries - North Ronaldsay

If they were going to the Faroes I'd be first in the queue! That's a destination that has been on my must do list for a long time, also a destination that seems to be even harder to get to by boat than North Ronaldsay! I'm sure I could fly, but there is something about a boat/ferry that makes a trip...

Re: Orkney ferries - North Ronaldsay

I would hover round the harbour and try to hitch a lift on a holiday boat or yacht That might work quite well for a good looking 20 year old with a small rucksack, not sure if it will go so well for a not so good looking 58 year old with a fully loaded touring bike! But wait I could hide my bike ro...

Re: Orkney ferries - North Ronaldsay

The thing is when I was last up there a couple of years ago, I'm sure that during the summer there were special "excursion" sailings that basically let you get out to North Ronaldsay and back in a day with time for a few hours on the island. I was hoping that something like one of those us...

Re: Orkney ferries - North Ronaldsay

Do I need my bike, possibly not, but I will have tent plus other stuff to carry and I like exploring places by bike. It was certainly worth having on the small isles a few years ago and they typically had fewer miles of road on them. So yes ideally I'd like to have my bike.

Re: Orkney ferries - North Ronaldsay

Hiring a boat is an interesting idea, but it can get pretty wild up there so I think I'd need a skipper, and a boat plus crew starts to sound expensive. But who knows, it is worth looking into.

Orkney ferries - North Ronaldsay

Hi, a couple of years ago I spent a very pleasant few days visiting each of the small isles (Rum, Eigg, Muck and Canna) followed by a trip out to South Uist. I enjoyed spending a night on each of these small islands and the contrast between them. So this year I hope to do the same with the various O...

Re: hebridean cycle way Bike transfer

You can't book the Gatliff trust hostels and there will not be anyone there to turn you away (a local who keeps an eye of the hostel will call in at some point to say hello and collect money). There is a chance that there may not be a bed available (but I've never seen them full), in which case you ...

Re: hebridean cycle way Bike transfer

In guess it depends when you go, but over the years various people stand out... I once stayed a couple of nights at Berneray and had a just retired touring cyclist from Newcastle and a young German for company. The German guy had an amazing collection of very light walking and camping gear that kept...
