Re: Over-powerful LED lights

The intent of selective yellow is to improve vision by removing short, blue to violet wavelengths from the projected light. These wavelengths are difficult for the human visual system to process properly, and they cause perceived dazzle and glare effects in rain, fog and snow.[7] Removing the blue-violet portion of a lamp's output to obtain selective yellow light can entail filter losses of around 15%,[8] though the effect of this reduction is said to be mitigated or countervailed by the increased visual acuity available with yellow rather than white light in bad weather.[7]
Interesting bit from Wiki. Enjoying my yellow night driving glasses which enable me to drive with confidence at night. Dazzle no longer a problem...

Re: Just how long will it take to turn this ship around?

The only thing that will turn us around economically is successful private business. Such businesses are lead by hard working, driven entrepreneurs. These folk must be incentivised. Heavy taxation out of line with world norms incentivises them to take their ideas and businesses abroad elsewhere.

Looks like we are on the path to recovery or alternately one can take the Baronesses pessimistic view that we are simply drowning our sorrows in despair!

Re: Just how long will it take to turn this ship around?

Then theres the case of artists, musicians and writers...big earnings one year and nothing for a year or two, they get trapped with this.
And then furlough...if you were one of these people who had large earnings for a single year before the pandemic you got practically nothing from the government and any savings you had just disappeared.
It isnt a given if you are a high earner. Many of these people work very hard and deserve high earnings.

Re: Just how long will it take to turn this ship around?

From the Telegraph.....
Stealth tax on £100,000 earners nets Treasury an extra £4.7bn
Erosion of personal allowance traps 1.35 million workers in 60pc band

Charlotte Gifford,
SENIOR MONEY REPORTER
22 March 2024 • 6:00am
Higher earners paid an extra £4.7bn to the Treasury last year because of a 60pc tax trap.

Today 1.35 million workers are impacted by the personal allowance taper – more than double the number when the policy was first introduced by the late Alistair Darling in 2010.

Under the rules brought in by the former Chancellor, those with an income over £100,000 lose the allowance at £1 for every £2 earned above the threshold.

The erosion of the allowance results in an effective income tax rate of 60pc.

Typical member of the establishment. A speech full of negativity and criticism without a single suggestion of practical action to redress the slide. How on earth such folk get into our Parliament beggars belief. With grand titled negative leaders like her we arent going anywhere.

People earning over about £125,000 a year don't get any tax free allowance, in other words the freeze won't affect the people the Conservative party represents. From a Tory point of view it's a perfect tax rise, the poor pay more and the wealthy don't.
Theres only about half a million people earning that or more and their collective efforts wont win an election. The Torys appeal has to be wider than that.

Re: Just how long will it take to turn this ship around?

All right, lets just call it a 1 million per annum increase in population. At 3 bodies to a dwelling it requires 300,000 additional homes. When we arent building anything like that number it increases scarcity and drives up costs and rents. The cost of rent increases seriously affects the poor and the possibility of owning a home for first time buyers diminishes.

That and eye watering energy costs are two of the main drivers of the feeling of gloom.

Careful Al, you’ll get yourself into trouble with such comments.
Yes Carlton, thats another aspect of British life that needs fixing - restoration of free speech. We have become a shadow of what we once were. Its no crime to point out the obvious, fudging it has what has got us into this situation where we have created an underclass partially by denial, political correctness and greed.

No one seems to have a realistic plan to fix the housing and energy crises which are at the heart of the widespread poverty?

Re: Just how long will it take to turn this ship around?

Its untenable. As we all know net immigration is approaching 1 million, thats 1,000 Grenfell Towers per annum. Lots of demand and greed since the early 2000s has forced up housing costs, the banks have piled in distributing big mortgages like confetti and any real drop in housing values would severly burn them and collapse the economy. Thus the least well off are toasted by unaffordable housing costs and Putins energy premium.

Personally I cannot see any way out of these conundrums that lie at the heart of Britains problems.

So, according to some Remainers the ordinary voter cant be represented by someone they vote for.

Doesnt really surprise me  Anyway we are out of the EU something ordinary people voted for. The establishment and most of academia will have to get over it...

Re: Are you "Infected by a remainer mind virus"?

Totally undemocratic, unsurprising... its the opinion of Remainers. Membership changed from what we originally voted for by the Maastricht Treaty. That was undemocratic too. I wouldnt term it a virus just a lack of understanding of what is right and fair.
