Also timing - have you got a visa as the visa waiver scheme limits you to 90 days in the country?
Rick
Yep..got a B2 visa giving me 6 months to crawl across if necessary!
This is what some of my musician friends in the states have told me:

Re: Start trans am mid june..is that 2 late????
I'm talking to some guys i know in the USA and to aman they all say get across before mid september...which poses a problem...can i make it in time...and i dont like riding to a deadline like that as i'll be tempted to rush and knacker myself....hmmm...starting to think about a change of direction...portland>astoria>Yorktown....weather would be more favourable that way around methinks...

Start trans am mid june..is that 2 late????
I'm about to hit the button on a flight to newportva to start the transam route to astoria oregon....looking at weather maps etc it seems ok...I reckon I will take 4 months to ride it as i'm solo fully loaded camping and so slower than some. My concern was th eweather at the end of th e ride in utah, colarado and oregon as i get near the rockies....I could delay and go in may 2013....now of never i guess...any thoughts final comments on the weather issue??? I will book the flights tomorrow morning assuming I havent missed something blatently obvious that others are aware of that would suggest a spring 2013 take off would be better??
Cheers.
Cheers.

Re: what tools for transam tour?
Thankyou all.
I am on a dawes galaxy with new mavic wheels which i had put on. I have schwalbe marathon plus 28's fitted. I am a heavy rider 6'4" at near 18stone I think..and i am solo touring with a full camping rig. I have just had new brakes fitted and a new cassette and chain in preparation for the ride. I will add the cable, brake pads and tape and ties into the kit. In case I do need to fit a new cable, is there some neat little trick to pull the cable tight without pliers or sim?
My tyres got me across europe ok, but I wont be able to carry a spare tyre ...I will have 2 spare tubes with me though.

what tools for transam tour?
i have a park multi tool with a spoke key, tyre levers, puncture kit, one spare spoke, chain lube, my chain has a chain link fitted in it. What else should i carry? I'm thinking there will be bike shops along the route as it's north america, i thought about a cassette removal tool but they seem heavy and i thought if a spoke goes i could tighten up the spokes on either side just a bit to get me to the next bike shop?
was thinking about pliers in case i have to tighten a cable...but again they are very heavy.
What would you take?

Re: France which way - North to South, or South to North..?
I did it north to south, to montpellier,,,it felt the right way to me. After lyon was the best bit..straight down the rhone through alres and avignon...flew back with easyjet.

Re: iPhone apps useful on a bike tour (e.g. good GPS?)
I have just ordered an android phone..htc s or something, unlocked.....will some of the above apps work on an android phone?? Or are there other andoid apps of use to touring cyclists?? Apologies if it seems a dumb question but up until now I have been operating with a simple 'old' nokia and dont really understand 'apps' etc yet.

Re: Cycletourists Anonymous
Ditto the norfolk thing...I did 9 days around the coast up from essex and back several years back and even though it was august it rained every single day except one which I spent on th ebeach at holkham. It was cold, wet , lonely and windy...when I got back i planned a tour from bremen to montpellier and rode it...havent toured for a few years but am planning trans am as i type.....perhaps there is a little elemant of self harming masochistic tendacies in cycle tourers??

The Blogger account will be linked to the google mail account that you have to set up to access the Play store.
Crazyguyonabike is a place where lots of people put touring blog things but I don't think its anything as slick as Blogger which is the original blogging site and is now owned by Google.
Al
Thanks...the blogger app from playstore on the phone sounds like the easiest thing for me to get along with...
