Re: Trail / All Mountain Bike

Thanks for the input alpgirl; your right on the hard tail point. I am not considering FS, and have been looking at 29ers in particular. Any other thoughts?

Trail / All Mountain Bike

I am thinking of getting said titled bike through bike to work scheme for more extreme winter commute. As I am more of a roady I am not so up to date on mountain bikes, added to that I am a complete bike snob so struggle with budget priced kit. Looking for something that will do winter commute (nort...

Re: 105 sti shifters - double/triple compatible?

I have a bike with ST 5600 shifters. I believe that unlike ST 5700 shifters, the left hand shifter will operate double and triple rings. Indeed, they changed this feature after some reliability issues when operating doubles. You would have to change the front mech for a FD 5603 as well as the chain...

Jake, A couple of things I would like to add to Paul's comprehensive write up here; on groupset selection as far as chainset etc I think it is very much personal choice, gearshifters do have other implications ... if you are planning on fitting a bar bag then Shimano STI cable routing will get in th...

Jake, I have had my amazon for a month now. Had a Dawes Galaxy for twelve years and was getting to the point of either a rebuild or go for a new bike altogether. I am in North Scotland and so the if I was to change the titanium was very attractive from a corrosion point of view, however i have to sa...

You say they are a kilo above the previous weight. What is the basic weight for a pair?

Van Nicholas is great. Have only ridden it a few times so far. had some problems with the left Shim 105 gear shifter .. it locked up and could not release tension at all .. have since got a replacement. The bike though to ride is great. Frame is solid with all the lugs you could ever need and does n...

I have been communting in Aberdeen for four years, and cycle all year round. Have until a couple of weeks ago done this on my Galaxy which I bought new 12 years ago. Other than annual replacement of chain and sprocket and the eventual wear and tear you get the bike is still in very good condition. T...

Front rack on carbon forks

Continuing the kitting out discussion of a Van Nicholas Amazon; the bike came with carbon front forks (with mud gaurd eyelets only). Is it possble to fit a front rack to this with brackets without damaging the forks? If so is there a rule of thumb maximum load or should I just find the largest bar b...

Disk Brakes on Touring Bike

Have recently bought a Van Nicholas Amazon and am considering winterising it with disk brakes. I currently have Shimano 105 on and easton circuit wheels. Realise there is some change required to do this .. but what. Any help on this would be appreciated.
