Try squeezing the side-plates of the link together first, then push the pins in towards each other.
It shouldn't need ant tools to undo, just your fingers.

Its pretty straight-forward as far as down as Erith, any bike will be fine. Gets a bit bumpy from Erith to the River Darent, you can then track back up the East side of the Darent under the Dartford Bridge to Greenhithe. Not good on a Road Bike, but a Hybrid is fine. I ride this way quite often. NCN 1 follows the Thames Path from Crayford Marshes (next to The Jolly Farmer's pub :D ) to Greenwich via Erith and Woolwich. Its not fast, and is a bit bumpy into Erith, but is a nice traffic free ride if you're not in any hurry. Goes past the Woolwich Ferry, Thames Bar...

You could try Downland Cycles in Canterbury : http://www.downlandcycles.co.uk/hubServicing.htm
I've not tried them myself, but they sell and service Rohloff hubs.

Ditchling Beacon is not very long. But it is quite steep :(

For a local steepness comparison try Eglinton Hill (near the top of Shooter's Hill).

About 3 or 4 times should do it :?
