Re: Disc frame touring build..or just go buy a bike?

And I've decided I'm going to sell my old spa tourer intact Brucey, so need everything transmission wise from scratch. Thinking more tourney/claris level than deore to save few quid. Never tried SRAM kit (or Campag).

Re: Disc frame touring build..or just go buy a bike?

Brucey, I'm thinking 48, 36, 26 front and an 11 to 34 (if 8 speed) cassette on the back. That should be enough to bail me out on the steep stuff if I'm touring light. 4 pannier bag days are over I think, at least on this bike.

Re: Disc frame touring build..or just go buy a bike?

Thanks chaps. Got the avids and the dial levers as I am using a mountain bike riser bar. Found a set of new, black mavic allroad gravel bike disc wheels for good £150 so gone with those and a set of Vitoria Revolution 700x 35s from Planet X. Clincher, not tubeless. It'll be Spa for the touring tripl...

Re: Disc frame touring build..or just go buy a bike?

Just looking into buying a set of Avid BB7 disc brakes for the build. Options include mountain bike and road. I'll be running 700c wheels and flat bars on the Camino build. Question is are these ok for the job? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Avid-BB7-Mountain-Mechanical-Disc-Brake-Front-Rear-Caliper...

Re: Disc frame touring build..or just go buy a bike?

The 1.5 watt XT won't charge didly squat. I know this because I had one

Thanks Bill. I'll look at something more powerful.

Re: Disc frame touring build..or just go buy a bike?

Slowster, I won't be doing much on stump strewn trails round cannock chase. Not worried about being in the dark in the woods. Dynamo hub need would be to charge lights and garmin when needed (couple of times a year). The Shimano XT dynamo deal at Spa deal looks a bargain. Looking at the LX17 rims now.

Re: Disc frame touring build..or just go buy a bike?

Boblo, you sound like you're looking for same kind of change as me. Last tour I did was great, with some 50 + mates on eurovelo 15. Instead of lugging everything every day, we shared van duties over half days. Meant that a pannier bag was as much as anyone needed. The reality is that the commute is ...

Re: Disc frame touring build..or just go buy a bike?

Having looked at a number of touring bikes and gravel bikes with disc brakes, I've come full circle and decided to build up from a frame. I came very close to buying a specialised sequioa today, but couldn't help feeling that I'd be missing a chance to try something more bespoke. Also came to the co...

Re: Disc frame touring build..or just go buy a bike?

Yo Stumpy, I have looked at the Spa Wayfarer, today in fact. Looks a good set up overall. I do fancy giving discs a go and have decided to buy a new bike rather than build. The old Spa frame (I had most other bits bar a touring triple) doesn't owe me anything after several years service. My daily co...

Re: Disc frame touring build..or just go buy a bike?

Thanks both Great advice. The inspiration for a change is riding with a bunch of mates recently who all had better stopping power than me - and raved on about disc brakes, I'm happy with my spa frame, so if there's a way of getting better, low maintenance braking without swapping frames I'll definit...

Disc frame touring build..or just go buy a bike?

I've got a nice spa cycles steel frame tourer with decent wheelset (sputnik), newish deore gearing, shimano flightdeck shifter/brakes and lot of other components I'm happy with. I've found a Surly disc trucker frame in my size (57 cm) under £400 and wondering whether It's practicable to keep the bit...

Re: 2-week cycle from Hook of Holland to... any recommendations?

Follow the Rhine to it's source in Switzerland on eurovelo 15? Plenty of interesting towns and cities including Arnhem, Rotterdam, Cologne, Strasbourg and plenty of decent campsites to choose from. There's a Cicerone guidebook too, with a downloadable route map.

Re: Commuting and touring saddle alternatives to the old B17?

Thanks folks.

friend has offered me a try of his Cambrian (with suspension seatpost) so I'll see how that goes. I'll definitely look into the try before I buy option too Paulatic. What would you recommend as an alternative to the TRK?

Commuting and touring saddle alternatives to the old B17?

Had a B17 for years which has done me on a few longish trips, but recently not without a spot of perineal pressure. I've changed tension, altered angles, even cut a hole out but it's just not working for me. Tried Charge spoon or 2 and went back to the brooks, same with a Rido some years back, a che...
