Mine did the same, not bothering with them again.

Re: Rest And Be Thankful
I cycled up the old road last summer mainly as there was traffic lights on the new road and didn't fancy trying to get through before the lights changed. The old road is very quiet but you do have to carry the bike over a couple of gates and is vert steep up to the car park at the end and yes I was thankful it was over.

Re: Noisy rear hubs: functionality or fashion?
I have two pairs of wheels with Hope Pro4 hubs both have noisy freewheels, I didn't buy the hubs for the freewheel noise I wanted something that was going to last a while and was easy to service when the time comes. As I understand it Hope used some toughened metal for the freewheel paws along with quite strong springs which is what I think makes them noisy, their reasoning it will last longer and give quicker engagement of the paws. On the move the noise doesn't really bother me I sort of leave the noise behind if that makes sense, I am aware but it doesn't bother me. Horses for courses I guess.

Re: King Alfred's Way opens soon ( I think )
Being the pedant that I am the map with all of the national trails on has a spelling mistake.
Its Fort Augustus rather than Ford.
I have done the first 60 miles of the Great North trail and its great although I was a little under-biked with a gravel bike in places.

Re: Lockerbie to Glasgow
I last rode this stretch last summer, as others have said the surface is a bit draggy in places and there is a long drag from Beattock which seems to go on forever. I have ridden this stretch probably 3 or 4 times now.

Re: King Alfred's Way
My experience of the Great North Trail is that large portions are more suited to MTB's I rode a gravel bike on this occasion, I think zulu Eleven's description is spot on.

More money than you budgeted for, so you may reject it on that basis. But for me it is the best bit of luggage ever. So long as your rack isn't narrow on top. Rugged, hard wearing material, simple velcro fixing, and it just feels like it is made to last. Contents stay dry. Mine has been going for a long time and looks set to last and last. And made in Lancashire. Could be too tall, so worth checking.
Thanks. I have Carradry Panniers from Spa and would be very happy with another Carradice product, but am not sure looking at the dimensions that it is wide enough to take my ‘D’ lock (6.25”/16cm wide at base). Also, is it flexible enough to allow a bit of compression? My rack is wide and long.
My SUper C rack bag is 7.5 inches wide and will give a little more

Re: Really Reflective Clothing / Bits
I have a Proviz gilet and a rain jacket, they work brilliantly in the dark, but as others have said a bit boil in the bag, I find the gilet better for that and use mine quite a lot during the darker months.
The self adhesive tape is also effective.

Tape bought from ebay and a RAW reflective mudflap.
