Re: Want to sell my car in order to cycle

I sold my car about 8 years ago and never looked back.

I thought about it before for a while and made lots of excuses for keeping the car.

If you spend £20 a week on petrol that's £1040 a year.
Tax, Insurance, MOT and Maintenace could be anywhere between £500 and £1000

Based on minimum wage and taking out Tax, Weapons and paying for the Royal Family, I worked out that owning a car meant that I had to work 6 weeks a year to pay for it.

Someone mentioned about getting a Touring bike for the job . I totally agree with that. I use my Thorn Sherpa and it's great for my shopping. I fill up all my panniers and it's easy.

I have a friend that has never had a car. He has a Surly Big Dummy and has move the entire contents of his house on it.

It needs a mindset change and preperation.

One thing I promised myself was that I wouldn't skimp on cycle clothing or anything I needed. If I needed that £40 pair of gloves or the Goretex jacket , then I'd buy it. The money I save every year is massive.

You can do it !

Re: Rain Jacket with Pit Zips ?

Thanks for the help.

In the end I've bought a Marmot Precip. Just what I was looking for.

Rain Jacket with Pit Zips ?

Hi All

I know there is a thread on rain jackets here but I need a rain jacket that has Pit Zips / Underarm vents.
It also needs to have a foldaway hood.

Any advice ?

Thanks !

Couldn't find exactly what I wanted so I made up my own.

Thanks for all the input.

Have you had your design made into a sticker and if so where?

I've just made the design up at the moment. Planning to get it turned into a sticker from somewhere.

I like the Ireland one and also that Blue Road sign that was posted.
I just like the idea of 2 metres on the sticker. I have the idea if you put 2 metres they'll give you 1.5. A bit like speed limits.

Re: Bicycle Bumper Sticker ?

I should have worded it better.

What I mean is if I'm hit with Covid then there's a very low chance I'll die.

If I'm hit by a car it's very high

Re: Bicycle Bumper Sticker ?

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Some good ideas.

I had a thought about copying a Covid social distance sign. and putting a car once side and a bike the other.

It says 2 metres. Well, I want 2 metres from a car that could kill me.

I would guess that I have more chance of dying due to a car crushing me than getting Covid.

Re: Bicycle Bumper Sticker ?

If I design my own then I'd appreciate some input on wording.

I think it's best to have something punchy, clear and to the point.

Any ideas are welcome.

Although I want to get 2 metres and think cyclists should have 2 metres, I thought it was 1.5 metres that was the UK rule ?

I see that Vistaprinta allow you design your own :

Bicycle Bumper Sticker ?

I'm looking for a decent bumper sticker for my campervan that says something like "I give space to cyclists" or "Give cyclists 1.5m" or something like that.
I've been looking on line but can't find many options.

I wondered if anyone knew where I could find something like that ?

Thanks !

Re: Tent help!

I used this on a bikepacking tour of the NC 500 in the Highlands a couple of years ago.

It's a Berguas 3.1 pro. It wasn't very expensive compared to some others I was looking at the did a similar job.

It stood up faultlessly in the Scottish weather.
On one occasion I was getting battered by extremely strong winds and hard rain for hours.
By morning the ground below my tent was totally saturated and there was standing water here and there but I was totally dry inside.

Here's a video I made when I first got it , so before the trip:

Time to shut your mouth.

You always know when the good weather has arrvived.
I was cycling along a moderately busy high street with my mouth open and a fly entered and hit the back of my throat.
Coughing ensued, eyes watered and the bike was pulled to the side of the road where more coughing continued until the microscopic blighter was expelled.
People in the area all looked over in concern, possibly thinking I had something other than a fly caught in my throat.
Just a reminder to everyone cycling out there that now is the time to shut your mouth.

Re: Best Track Pump

Thanks Colin.

I did do a search for this topic but the Cycling UK search facility is less than useless.

I generally do a google search with Cycling UK in the search terms and that finds it better but not this time.

Cheers
