Re: It works
This is wonderful: Brucey is back! Along with 531Colin and Chris Juden, what a team! So, Brucey, if it works now, why won't it continue to do so? Best wishes, Ian

It works
With a bit of luck, here is a picture of my Winter bike, newly-converted from hub gear to derailleurs. Chris Juden, much missed CTC technical adviser, said Shimano 10speed GRX would work with Campag 10 speed levers, and it does, perfectly. The hub is a Shimano XT with an 11-34 casette paired with 44/28 chainrings, all from Spa Cycles. Thanks to a bit of advice from 531Colin the BB7 cable disc brakes work nicely, again with the Campag ergo levers. I am just about to fit the mudguards.

Brake Disc "Flatness"
I have fitted Avid BB7's to my winter bike. The Avid disc is not quite flat, has slight side to side run-out, and therefore rubs very slightly on the pads. After a couple of rides it will probably sort itself out. However, is this common to all discs, or are some, Shimano for example, perfectly flat? By the way, I have tried a different, new, Avid disc, which has the same side to side run-out.

Stronglight also do one 10/11 speed, Spa cycles have them.

Re: Roy Swinnerton frames
Roy Swinnerton frames of the '60's and 70's were built by Mercian, and were things of beauty. The Swinnerton professional was very highly regarded. Les West won many races on one, including two milk races and the National Amateur road race champs.

Cycle Touring Club Archive
Is there such a thing as the CTC archive, and if so, how can it be accessed? I am looking for "Cycle Touring" magazine articles from around 1987 to 1990.

TRP Spyre Disc brake calipers
I am thinking of replacing my 20-year-old Avid BB7's with TRP Spyres, because on the latter, both pistons act on the disc when the lever is pulled. So, are the Spyres as good as they sound? Ian

Re: Sturmey Archer drivers, from the '60s
Just to clarify: AF-9 hub has a 12 spline driver.

Re: Sturmey Archer drivers, from the '60s
This thread is of real interest. I have an Sturmey AF-9 four speed hub with a splined driver and 18 tooth sprocket, held by a threaded lock-ring. This is destined for my 1950 Raleigh Clubman, which has the standard 46 tooth chainwheel. I would like to reduce the gearing a bit; so, does anyone have a larger splined sprocket they would part with? Up to now, I didn't think they existed, but have only recently begun to delve into the arcane world of Sturmey-Archer, much of which is still a mystery.

Re: Latest generation Alfine 8spd
Thanks for that, Sum, very helpful. "Faffage" is an excellent word. I have decided to abandon hub gears and convert my winter bike to derailleurs. I have some Campag 10 spd levers in my spares box, so, thanks to an invaluable post from Chris Juden, I shall use them with a Shimano GRX mechanism. Chris is much missed as the technical advisor to the CTC magazine (which I have been reading since it was "The CTC Gazette).

Latest generation Alfine 8spd
My winter bike has a first generation Alfine 8 spd hub, operated by a Jtek H/bar end lever. After many winters, it works well. The drawback is, in the event of a puncture, wheel removal and replacement is faff at the best of times, and very awkward and time consuming with cold fingers in winter.
So, is the latest incarnation more user-friendly, and will it work with my existing lever?
My current way of dealing with the issue is to use Marathon Plus tyres with the inner-tubes ready filled with slime ( which was a mistake because, when they need a top up of air, the slime goes every where and then clogs the valve.

Re: Wheel building
The reason for asking the question is that I have a nice 36 hole Campag S/F hub, and there is a 36 hole 16" rim on ebay. Thanks for all your replies, they are much appreciated. Bearing in mind what has been said, I suppose non of you would advocate using a L/F hub; though, of course the rear S/A four speed is large(ish) flange.

Wheel building
I have recently rescued a 1965 Moulton from the skip. I will need to build a new 16" front wheel. The original has 28 spokes; which seems a lot for such small wheels. So, what about building with 18 spokes, (36 hole hub & rim)? Will radial spoking be OK? Also, the present spokes are very heavy gauge; is this necessary, or just what was available at the time?

Re: Wheel building
Thanks for all those replies, they have been very helpful. I shall have a go at building 4X. I have built lots of wheels in the past, but always 3X.

Wheel building
Good moaning, I am about to rebuild a rear wheel which has a 27" Weinmann rim on an Airlight L/F hub. Currently it has 4X spokes: why did they do this? I intend to rebuild it 3X with new spokes (the originals are chrome and in poor condition).
