Re: Lightweight mid-size (21-22") step-through or mixte, frame or bike

Can I suggest a Raleigh pioneer like this one:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/285747237292

We have one for one of our grandchildren. See light and nice to ride.

Re: locked up

I always follow the valuables in a bar bag advise. If my dirty clothes got stolen I will survive.
For B&B's look for ones with secure storage. If you find one then mention the cycle storage in any reviews you write. Use "Cyclists Welcome".
Premier Inn always let you take a bike into your room.

Re: Breaking spokes on new e-bike - how many is too many?

I Would say 2 broken spokes is too many. Whatever the reason a wheel that keeps breaking spokes needs to be rebuilt. New spokes at the very least.

Re: Non Cycling physics question

We have a pond and a pump for a small waterfall, it hasn't frozen even at -8 last week. The rain tops up the pond on a regular basis. The birds are regular visitors for a drink.

Trustee Elections 2023

Why would we make an effort to vote when they give us 2 candidates for 2 positions. Obviously they will both be elected. The Boards Nominations Committee rejected all the other candidates, so effectively they picked the winners. That feels more like a dictatorship than a democracy. Your thoughts please?

Re: secure city bike parking

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) offers Cycle Hubs as a safe and secure place to lock your bike under cover, protected by CCTV and a swipe-card entry system, £10 per year basic, there are a couple of "posh" hubs that cost more. These hubs are at Train and Tram stops in the main as far as I know, but I don't use the city centre ones.

We also have blue bike lockers, one off cost about £10, not very good as a standard straight handle bar bike doesn't fit, I used to take my folder!

Re: Bike lights

Before last winter started I purchased the Halfords 1600 lamp. Here is an updated 1800:
https://www.halfords.com/cycling/bike-a ... 93718.html

The most light per £ I have ever achieved, best light I have ever had. Wasn't keen on the fitting (Which looks unchanged), but it had a camera style screw in, so I just reused a fitting from an old lamp. Typically I run it at half power, which is more than enough for me. Love the display showing how long you have left at the power you are on. Never go out in the dark on my bike without it.

Re: Birchwood to Salford Manchester

There is a little track from M62 J11, down towards Hollins Green, from there a variety of cycle tracks take you towards Eccles and onto Salford, or over the bridge, there is a track then beside the ship canal to Partington.

Re: "Countryside" LEJOG

Sustrans has a LEJOG route available. It does go through Manchester, and probably some other big places. You can either work out your own bypass or rely on the local knowledge put into those routes.

Re: Insuring work laptop during commute?

Well I negotiated 2 computers, one for home, one for the office. That way I didn't have to carry it in every day. Now that worked out very well. On the odd occasion we needed an extra computer in the office, e.g. someone's being mended, then I would bring it in.

Radar Locks on Trans-Pennine Trail gates?

Trafford council have responded to my Freedom of Information request about the gates that prevent disabled access on the Trans-Pennine Trail with the following: "Radar locks are fitted to gates on the trail to allow access for all."

Now to me they look like standard squire padlocks. Anyone know if keys are available for these locks?

Cadent Gas

Is it a nationwide issue that Cadent Gas do not leave enough time for cyclists at their roadworks? It certainly seems to be a regular thing in Cheshire / Manchester. They cone off a long section of road, presumably for the safety of their workers, they don't give cyclists enough time to get through. Last time I complained they just put up "Cyclist Dismount" signs. Here is a video of their latest effort near me, which seems unchanged since I passed it a week ago, except more cones have been demolished.

In my house, take the lid off, open the valve, then it all goes in the dishwasher.

Hedge Clipping

I have seen much more hedge clipping than usual on the Manchester/Cheshire border. Is there a new government subsidy for cutting hedges and leaving all the mess on the road?
