Re: electric bikes on ferries

haha, yes, I was asked if I had flammable liquids, knives or multi tools. Of course not! Why would any cycle tourist ever carry these things????

Re: electric bikes on ferries

Well, I went to Roscoff and back on the ferry. There was no question if the bike was electric or not. So, the answer to my own question is.........Yes, you can take an ebike on the ferry with no problem.

So did you choose the GSD because of it's extra carrying capacity, or because of its looks? (I think it's the best looking!)

Of the other 3, what were the main differrences you felt between them? Did you notice the slack seat tube angle on the GSD/HSD vs Q-H/Vektron?
I chose it because it felt the best built, sturdier of the lot. I don't find it particularly attractive but the ride is superb. I'm 6'2" and the slack seat tube angle is great. The motor (Bosch gen 4 cargo line) is simply the best motor I've ever used, the torque is there immediately and at lower cadence than the gen 4 cx motor, which is also great, just not as smooth. For the record I've used all motors available since 5 years as I am in the trade. The HSD is also very good but no suspension, though lighter. The vectron feels like a toy. The performance line motor is not comparable to the cargo line motor. As I live in hilly Cornwall and sometimes I carry lots of shopping, the GSD was a no brainer. In my mind, any cargo bike needs a decent, high torque motor and lots of weight capacity. IF I had the money I'd have a R&M Load 60......absolute dream to ride, but nearly double the price of a GSD, which in many ways much less practical as an everyday bike.

Re: electric bikes on ferries

Thanks everyone. Indeed there seems no info on it online. I'll call them and find out. As far as I'm aware if the battery is on the bike its ok, if its in luggage it might not be....

Re: "The country where one in three adults rides an electric bicycle"

Its funny reading the comments about why people should not ride ebikes......why in the Netherlands? Because its bloody windy there! Even windier than Cornwall, where I highly recommend ebike use! And, fitness? How about some people ride much higher milages per annum than they would on a non electric bike? I would find it quite blissfull if 2/3rds of cars on the road were people on ebikes instead.

Re: Are Reiss & Mueller worth the extra cost?

Have you ridden any R+M bikes? I've ridden several, just last week I rode the Load 60 with belt drive enviolo, full suspension and twin batteries. I rode it on and off road and it was a dream!! I've ridden several other models of 'normal' type bikes from R+M and there is just something about them which oozes quality. If you were to ride one I am sure that you will be leaving the Motus in the past and wonder why you didn't get one many years ago!

Re: Do many use a Hammock in the UK and Europe

I've used and have three hammocks, they are great, as long as there is somewhere to hang them. It takes a bit of getting used to but coupled with a tarp they incredibly versatile! Also great for stealth camping.

Hi, I am thinking about taking the ferry to Roscoff from Plymouth and returning from Santander but, can I take an ebike on the ferry?

Re: Dawes Sportif 2010

I recently bought one of these bikes, the comp version and am very happy with it. I swapped the cassette up to a 27 tooth as this is the largest usable with the short cage sora mech. I did not need to change the chain aswell as the one supplied is new and the correct length. The sportif is now prepped for a tour, madrid to marrakesh. I would not hesitate buying one especially for £450, even though the block was changed, at a cost of £27. A great bike, comfortable and well built.
