“I don't know where you are, but in my city lots of public bike racks have U locks left on them. Makes perfect sense. The railway station on-platform bike racks do too, and my employer's caged bike racks do. I leave mine attached to a Sheffield stand. That's the only place I need to lock it, so there's no point me dragging an extra kilo around”
Not bothered what someone chooses to do, but, just interested that they felt the need to complain when their so called ‘valuable’ locks were damaged!

Re: A car hit my locks. incident.
Weird! Why would you leave your lock like that - at best it’s dumping your crap on someone else’s property. So how would you be any better off if the landowner simply had your lock cut off and dumped it??

What is wrong with people? What a ridiculous thread title, and, people on here complain about others twisting the truth.

Well! after four pages of ‘discussion’ nobody’s persuaded me that’s it’s anything other than a completely pointless daft idea

Re: Sustrans signs showing time instead of distance
I’ve felt that Sustrans have done some questionable things in the past, but this is completely bonkers! It makes the signs meaningless. How can they possibly assess the potential speeds of ‘customers’ looking at them? If they are sanctioned/approved for highway use, or whatever as the claim, I think I’ll approach our local council and ask if they will be putting the time to destination on our local road signs. I’m sure drivers will think it’s a fantastic idea, cue hysterical laughter! Sadly made them a laughing stock

Re: Close Pass of the Day .....
Mike F - Yup! Completely agree. From the sound of these threads I don’t seem to get that many close passes. What amazes me is, as you say, they miss me by crossing completely to the other lane, oblivious to vehicles coming the other way.
One of the scariest/most stupid passes I’ve had, was a young woman with two kids, giving me loads of space, on a blind bend, and (I guess) even telling the kids to wave to me

Re: Drivers overtaking too cautiously?!
Interesting thread. Everything is a matter of perception to everyone - we're all very different. I can see the point of being as worried about a hesitant driver as a fast one. I’ve had a couple of incidents recently that have made me ‘think’!
Cycling along an open, reasonably wide straight country road, no other traffic in sight, car followed me for the best part of half a mile, then overtook as we approached a bend! Now, not so worried about the road safety issue, more, why were they doing it? The longer it went on the more disconcerting it was. Another thought occurred - what if I had been a lone female cyclist?
Second was in the car, coincidentally on the same road! As earlier, fine for bike and car, but, not two cars. Vehicle behind very close, weaving from side to side, then gesticulating, finally sounding horn. Why? Nowhere to pull in, wife driving at a reasonable 50 ish. Was it going to become threatening? Never found out.

Re: Is this too narrow to pass and who do I tell?
Interesting! Looking at the pic I’d go for primary, straight down the middle, no messing about. You really can discount the ‘cycle lanes’ as you are very close to the parapet, or the pavement and likely to be in any debris as well.

Assumed that the OP is ‘tongue in cheek’? They’re certainly on the up around our area, probably 25% of all the bikes we see.

Interesting thread! Surprising people having problems, don’t know if there is any sort of nationwide policy. Been to our ‘tip’ at Taunton and had no problems at all.

Re: Petty annoyances on the road....
Fully agree! On another level, it’s frightening because it just shows that their judgement is so poor - if they can’t overtake when there is space, what happens when there isn’t? The follow on from not overtaking when there is lots of space, is that they then get frustrated and push past when there isn’t any.Manc33 wrote: ↑27 Dec 2021, 4:38am Cars that won't go past me when "you could fit a bus through there". Have they knocked a cyclist off in the past? Are they drunk? I don't trust these people! I'm not saying cars should take risks and pass too close, I am saying there's endless instances on really wide roads where they still won't go past me. Get real! GO. PAST. ME.

Re: i'm no longer comfortable on the roads
I recently read (on a motorbike blog) about the distinction between 'feeling comfortable' and being 'safe'.millimole wrote: ↑27 Oct 2021, 7:10pmDoesn't mean they feel nice. If they scared almost all walkers, cyclists and horse riders off the roads, it would seem very safe in the statistics. Doesn't make it right, though.mjr wrote:[quote="Mike Sales" post_id=1649239 time=1635354611 user_id=8429]
How can this be?
We have the safest roads in Europe, and they get safer every year.
We are told.
There are roads that feel great to ride on, but have a poor safety record, and, there are roads that feel horrible to ride on, but are actually very safe.
I have had more 'issues' on country lanes than fast straight A roads. For *me* country lanes no longer feel comfortable, but they are safe. Main rural A roads, lightly trafficked, feel comfortable to me, but are probably more risky according to the statistics.

I thought that country lanes had been proved to be the most dangerous!
