Re: Off yer bikes

Although I think we can probably rule out the weather as a causal factor of an increase in bike sales this summer, ... Yebbut... If you're going to buy a bike, and the weather's bad, then surely it makes sense to buy as fast a bike as possible, to get out of the rain in shortest time? I'll get my (...

Re: Has Health and Safety gone too far

Has Health and Safety gone too far? Yes. Next question... But this clip doesn't show it. It WOULD have gone too far if normal football were banned, and only the polytunnel-protected variety were allowed. If you google "Ashbourne Shrovetide Football", you see what the beautiful game used to...

Re: How often do you actually get a puncture?

I had ten or more in 2008; I can't find the list (D*mn these computers with their near-infinite disk space) 2009: 4 punctures. 2010: 2 punctures. 2011: 1 puncture (so far) I've no idea what's causing the reduction. Now using Schwalbe Marathons on almost all my bikes; and the new vehicles (Trek Soho,...

Re: Impressive but expensive breakdown

This happens a lot in cyclo-cross races. It's not unusual for several people to lose rear mech's in this fashion in an hour long cross race, especially if it's muddy. My wife managed to rip 3 rear mechs off in 12 races last season. This is a possible reason for the marketing of the Genesis Day-One ...

Re: Slow Riders on new, clean, Expensive Bikes

The best things come to those who wait. I ordered some new bling in November. Genesis Day-One Alfine, 8-sp hub, disk brakes. It finally arrived at my bike shop on Monday. The mudguards, rack, Brooks B17 and slightly-less-knobbly tyres will be fitted and ready on Wednesday, but I'm off camping for tw...

Re: Side of Bus Shelter 1 - 0 My Bike

That layout is insane - I'm not a person who would generally say 'claim against the council' but in this case even I would look into doing so. At the very least I'd want the accident officially logged and the layout investigated with a view to it being altered- widened into the verge if nothing els...

But, technically, I'm back here because yacf is "encountering technical difficulties".

Re: blinded by the lights

You need brighter lights - preferably one you aim at the driver. Or the courage to weave across the road with your hand up... If the oncoming driver is a fair distance away, I take both hands off the bars, cross them in front of my face, and rely on the retroreflectives on my sleeves and gloves to ...

Don't argue with idiots. They bring you down to their level, then win by the experience of having been at that level for WAY longer.
Stay safe out on the roads - heavily-armoured nutters are out there.

Re: Daytime lights on pedal cycles

I think the difference with cars is that they normally conform when new so if you keep everything properly maintained, you will be compliant, or at least the car will*. If only. Many BMWs, Volvos and Volkswagens have flashing tail and brake lights. Most people can't TELL that they're flashing, as t...

This suggests that the injury lawyers of your acquaintance have knuckle dusters, baseball bats and do evening work as nightclub bouncers. Lovely mental image!

Yesterday, I went to the local pharmacy, where I have been a customer over 35 years, to collect my repeat prescription (as I have done every month for the last 6 years.) They were shut for lunch so I called back. The pharmacist called to me by from his dispensing station to say if I had waited he h...

Re: Cyclists fined for no lights

Once upon a time in Cambridge, the police had a crackdown on unlit bikes. They would confiscate the bike. But you'd get it back if you presented yourself to the police station, armed with nothing more than a pair of lights. They'd even help you fit them. In terms of "Let the punishment fit the ...

Re: Bicycle Tax

Why do I have to queue behind a group of cyclists when they don't pay VED and fuel tax like me? Because your car is burning a finite resource. And using up much more road space than you need. How often does your car have all its seats full? My bike (but not my tandem) never goes out carrying an emp...
