Re: Carlisle to Inverness via Glasgow/Fort William

I decided to avoid Glasgow and that awful road the B7076. After Gretna I took the B roads to Dumfries then B729 through Monaive to and up the A78 ( horrible in a few bits ) to the ferry to Dunoon. Then it was superb cycling - great scenery and quiet - for A roads - up the A815 and via lots of lochs...

Re: Route advice please Greenock-Cumnock.

Hi there, I would personally say head through the national park from Greenock to Largs... only problem is going South there will be a steep climb as soon as you head towards the park: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=greenock&ll=55.938145,-4.770555&spn=0.000096,0.051413&hnear=Greenock,+I...

Re: Request for Route Comments - JOGLE

Day 14 - Going on the A30!? Braver man than I am. I realise it's only a couple of miles but it is a nasty road. I don't agree at all. Fair enough - you are a local so probably have more experience with the road. For me personally I wouldn't go near it while on a cycling 'holiday', which it was for ...

Re: Thoughts on this route though Scotland.

Day 7 - a cool 465 miles? :P Your route is very similar to the one we did. I would definitely recommend the B road after Fort Augustus. To be honest the few days before getting there had been flat so we were quite happy to have a decent climb  The views at the top are def worth it, plus you...

Re: Request for Route Comments - JOGLE

Day 10 - you seem to be on the A49 for most of the day. Seems to be a lot of people who think the road is fine, but I personally find it too busy for enjoyable cycling and seeing as you have two weeks why not go a more scenic route? e.g. straight out of Whitchurch you can head through Wem and onto S...

Re: Finalised my route... advice/feedback?

To be honest, as I've said above, my route has been planned through google maps suggestions and trying to avoid A-roads. I really don't know any way that I would be able to judge the gradient of my route short of seeing it for myself? If I'm honest, I'm not overly keen on hills and I certainly woul...

Re: Train issues at both ends of LEJOG

Hi, Have you considered flying back from Wick? Just had a quick look on the train line and a single in June for the train looks to be about £170. Also had a quick look on skyscanner and you can get a flight for around £120 and ship your bike back for £50. We flew back and found it much less stressfu...

Re: 101 Police Number Useless?

Sorry to hear about your incident, some people really shouldn't be on the road. I had an incident in September where the passenger of a car leant out of the window to push me off. Luckily I was going slow and didn't actually come off the bike. I managed to get the reg and there was a van coming the ...

Re: It's now or never ! (update route advice)

Just one quick one I noticed: Day 2 - At about the 38 mile point why not head North East towards the Crowdy reservoir? Can easily join back up with your route at mile 44. We went that way and it was some lovely scenery. Can stay off the A39 then. The rest of your ride is completely different to mine...

Re: Accommodation - book in advance or leave to chance?

I booked all mine in advance and I will do the same again next time I do it. I did go in peak season so that impacted my decision last time, but I would do it any time of the year to know I have a bed and shower waiting for me at the end of the day. Are you planning a high number of miles a day? Whe...

Re: Juries still think SMIDSY is a good excuse to kill cycli

I have little faith in the whole jury system after I did my jury service. The trial went on for a couple of days and even after the very first session as we were walking out someone said 'well he looks guilty' before hearing a shred of evidence. It was pretty obvious what the outcome would be from t...

Don't often post here, but heard this on the local news and thought it would be of interest: http://www.southwalesargus.co.uk/news/10988393.UPDATE__Ebbw_Vale_driver_who_caused_death_of_Markham_cyclist_is_jailed/?action=complain&cid=12437982 Correct me if I'm wrong. The driver was on the phone, ...

Re: April 2014 13 day Lejog (UPDATE P3- SCOTLAND!?)

With regards to the A82 - We joined it at South Ballachulish, so can't comment on your route before that. I personally found it horrible South of Fort William, quite a narrow windy road with a lot of traffic (we did go over the summer hols though). It wasn't as bad North of Fort William - seemed les...
