Re: Ultegra - XT compatibility

I am sorry to revive this old post but I just wanted to report on the set up I have ended up with on my drop handlebar touring bike. I now have the following: Shimano Ultegra 6703 break/shifters Shimano Ultegra 6703 front derailleur Shimano 105 triple chainset, with the inner ring replaced with a 24...

Re: Ultegra - XT compatibility

Thanks cycleruk and Brucey - you have saved me wasting my money on a new Ultegra chainset that won't take a sub-30 inner ring. Looks like I might have to go for the 105.

Re: Ultegra - XT compatibility

I've done a bit more online research and it seems there are ways to make the Ultegra 10-sp setup more touring friendly. There is a lot of information at the following website about suitable replacement chainrings and possible gear ratios for both 9- and 10-speed: http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/chai...

Re: Ultegra - XT compatibility

OK, thanks everyone. So much useful information. I wish Shimano would pay attention and make a touring road set up with a sufficient range for big mountain climbing. Anyway, I will stick to a road front mech (probably ultegra) and a 9sp XT derailleur (which I already have). I will go for Ultegra cha...

Re: Ultegra - XT compatibility

Thanks for the advice on the front changer and the difference between the middle and outer chainring. Would an XT front mech work better? Is that still compatible with the Ultegra shifters? I seem to remember reading somewhere that it is best not to mix road and MTB front mechs.

Re: Ultegra - XT compatibility

Thank you very much for all the replies - very helpful. I couldn't have guessed that the 9sp XT has the same leverage as an Ultegra 10sp. I also like the idea of the XT chainset as I never need a 52 chainring for touring. Combining a closer-range Ultegra cassette with the lower range XT chainset cou...

Ultegra - XT compatibility

I ride a touring bike with drop handlebars and want a set up with Ultegra 6703 10sp triple STI levers. The trouble is, if I stick to an Ultegra set up, the greatest gear range I can get is a 30T small chainring and 28T largest cassette cog. This just isn't a big enough range for expedition touring o...
