Getting bike back from JohnO'G: what I did
I keep meaning to write up my LEJOG trip for posterity- nothing special as a ride but one or two reflections might help other middle aged fat blokes who want to do it.
In meantime, though, a thought on getting your bike back from J O'G as I've noticed Qs on this thread since I joined the CTC forum, and I thought what I did might be of interest.
I got into John O'G about 2pm and then caught the ferry from there at 4.30pm (might have been 4pm?) to the southern most point of the Orkneys, then road up to Kirkwall (one or two deceptively grindy hills and it started to pee down big time, so I was pretty soaked by the time I got in, but no matter). I had a flight booked for the next day from Kirkwall to Glasgow (cheaper than the train as I booked in advance), and picked up a free bike box (cardboard) from the town's only bike shop (really nice lads, both of them ex-LEJOGers). I did that on spec but it may be safest to ring them first to see if they've got a box.
It was bit complicated getting it to the airport (I went there first thing to check it was ok to do all this as Flybe had been totally unclear on phone), and then nipped back the 3m into town and back again for £10 by tax, though of course th simplest thing to have done would have been to box the bike at the shop and then take a taxi up one way. Staff at airport were great too - not the kind of service you'd get in Manchester....
In any event I was in Glasgow for around 1pm after a v short flight, having had the pleasure of a ride/night on the Orkneys as well (though I got there Sunday night and it was very, very quiet in Kirkwall by 9pm, just when I fancied a pint or two).
hope this helps. Obviously it's not for everyone, not least as if everyone starts doing it there'll be no bike space on the flights, but it is a different way. And of course if it's not a rush to get back for work, a gentle day or two around the islands would be a great way to finish of LEJOG.

NCN 45 & 41 etc: panniers or trailer?
Hi all
My 11 year old determined that I will be riding with him from St Helens to the South coast nr Lyme Regis at the end of July (in aid of Wateraid). He's a pretty good rider for his age (having just done Coast to Coast), and thinks he can do it in 4 days, but has tasked me with the precise route. I can hold my own on a bike, having done LEJOG a while back.
I've dug out the bike buggy (from when he was a bit smaller) from the shed and am thinking about using it to take the camping gear we'll need for the three nights, given his determination to do it the hard way. Tell me, experienced CTC people: is taking a trailer, with a view to using the NCN 45 then 41 between Chester and Bristol, then down pat Weston to Bridgwater and on to Crewkerne etc, a viable option, or should I pannier myself to the gills?
