Re: Velocity Atlas touring rims

Poor service from the bike shop. There is no way those rims should have failed if that little mileage had been done on them. The manufacturer should have been contacted about it.

Re: Dynamo shadow

Hi

Thanks but how would that work with the brake cable (see photo)? The brakes are cantilever (bike dates from 1993).

Dynamo shadow

Hello I have a B&M Eyc (50 lux) dynamo light which is one of their newer lights. Tiny and powerful... But the shadow cast by the mudguard detracts from the light's capabilities. To try to solve the problem a friend made and S shaped bracket to attach to the light's bracket.. The aim being to tak...

Re: 42 cm Surly Disc Trucker STI shifters and 22-30-40

Hello again Thanks to everyone for all their suggestions. I wanted to post a closing message on this thread with the specfic part numbers that were finally used that made it all work. Shimano technical people informed the bike shop that the last (i.e. not the most recent) version of Tiagra STI lever...

Re: 42 cm Surly Disc Trucker STI shifters and 22-30-40

Thanks again for replies. Norman, the chainset is deore XT. No idea on chainline. The sti and FD are tiagra 10 speed and shimano have changed something with the spec. I wasn't given any indication that the rings wouldn't work with the sti levers, and reading people's responses it seems that the fram...

Re: 42 cm Surly Disc Trucker STI shifters and 22-30-40

Went to see the lbs. The small frame is key to the problems plus shimano altering compatability of parts (don't understand tbh). Might be ok sourcing 9 speed components as other bikes run with sti levers and small rings, but the parts aren't available (tiagra 9 speed no longer sold). Feel very stuck...

Re: 42 cm Surly Disc Trucker STI shifters and 22-30-40

Thanks for the replies and the link to an earlier conversation about this. That thread doesn't mention the frame size, and it is this added issue that seems to be causing the problem. What is unclear to me is why it can work with down tube shifters or bar end ones but not STI. I did wonder, now I kn...

42 cm Surly Disc Trucker STI shifters and 22-30-40

Hi there I'm hoping someone can help with a technical query. I thought I'd been given a spec for a new 42cm Surly disc trucker that would work. But today discovered that the set up I need won't work... I decided on drop bars and STI levers because I'm most comfortable with this (moving from down shi...

Re: SSTI shifters/brake levers and drops for small hands

Debbie, I moved from down tube shifters to STIs. I thought I'd like them but didn't and so I changed again to bar end shifters . They're fairly easy to reach from most positions on the handlebar, and they allow the hand to grip the handlebar while shifting gear. They are readily available second ha...

Re: SSTI shifters/brake levers and drops for small hands

Sorry Colin thanks for the pics.... Mmm no response on the wanted page. Will try some cycle jumble places and mechanics that might keep things like that. Cheers Debbie Brucey Just read your post with the pics. The first pic is the brakes I have. Given all that you've explained I shall stick with wha...

Brucey

Just read your post with the pics. The first pic is the brakes I have. Given all that you've explained I shall stick with what I have on this bike. Many thanks.

Re: SSTI shifters/brake levers and drops for small hands

Thanks for that suggestion. Worth a try. BTW on your present bike do you mean SIS rear shifting and friction front? And perhaps STX or LX cantis? I don't recall SLX ones from that period. Yes The chainset and cranks are TA (triple) and still working beautifully. Brakes - hard to tell as the letterin...

Re: SSTI shifters/brake levers and drops for small hands

Thanks for all this, especially Brucey for a really helpful post. I very much appreciate the time you've taken. Brucey - I'd agree with you re modern isn't always better - I just want to inform myself a bit more before making any decisions. What I really need to do is ride a bike with STI shifters f...
