Re: Genesis Vagabond
I've only turned my back on lycra metaphorically...
Saying that there is something cathartic about riding in Rohan breeches and a bobble hat, on a chunky steel bike with a leather saddle and a brass bell.
You really do build some well thought out machines. My sardar is disc brake ready, but it works well enough as is.

I've taken a big step back from cycling...I'm sick of lycra clad wannabes the wrong side of 40 thinking they're Wiggins!
I'm back on the thorn or the sardar, ive ditched Strava and I try to avoid lycra!
Back to basics cycling is the future. It's about the journey, not the Strava average.

Re: Electric Bike Conversion
I honestly think e assist bikes are the future. No one in my Cycle club agrees...but they're a bunch of elitist roadie knobs on the whole!
My lbs ( Paul Hewitt, Leyland) has just got some BB drive down tube motors, as used to cheat in pro cycling.
At the right price they'd revolutionise cycling. I could go out with my wife and kid, and we'd all be able to ride together. They'd level the fitness playing field, and make social group rides enjoyable for everyone. No need to buy an ugly, cumbersome e bike either.

What's the obsession with weight in leisure cycling?
A kilo either way makes no noticeable difference.
I lost 4kg for a cycling holiday to majorca in April. If I could be bothered I could lose another 3kg.
I carry 800g of stuff I don't need on club rides ( wallet, hrm, keys, watch, big Garmin)
If you're not a 5%bodyfat racer component weight is small change.
Decent tyres, clean drivetrain, well set up bike? Maybe half an hour extra of interval training a week and a bit of yoga instead?

If you want jawbreakers they do some superb copies on aliexpress. $20 Vs £100.
I've had them side by side with original Oakleys... Nothing really different!
I've got some black and red homage jawbreakers you can have for £12 delivered!

Re: Lubing gear cables in install?
Before i went out on my bike today I tried to source some tf2 red grease locally, to no avail.
I had a ride out to a cafe in Southport, Mecycle, that sells a few bike bits... Guess what they had on the shelf!?!
Cables fitted and lubed!

Re: "lost" three gears!?!
Correct diagnosis. The cable was very frayed!
Changed, lubed as instructed and working perfectly. I've done both sides, but the lh cable was perfect.
New cables will be an annual thing from now on!

Lubing gear cables in install?
Should I?
They're Clark's stainless.
If so, what with?
Ta!

Thanks...You've both confirmed what I thought.
Now...do I lube the gear cable on install? I know some do.
If so, what's the best way?

"lost" three gears!?!
I've "lost" 3 gears on my thorn audax.
It's 9sp ultegra, and on the way home from work I noticed the derailleur no longer reaches the three lowest gears on the cassette.
There are still nine clicks, but the first three don't pull any cable. If i pull the cable by hand on the down tube the derailleur shifts.
If I remove the slack and clamp the cable tighter at the rear mech, i can access the lower geared end of the cassette, but lose the three higher sprockets.
I am bewildered. Everything was working fine...A little play in the whole system, but ok.
The shifters are old 9sp, and get lubed with gt45 and spray grease as recommended here.
The cables are visually ok, but at least 3 years old.
I've ordered some eBay Clark's cables (another recommendation from here) as my first solution...
Am i missing something obvious?
Thanks FBD

The sardar is a great bike for bad roads and bad weather.
I've ridden the north face trail in Grizedale on mine when. I bumped into mates MTBing whilst on a tour.
You only realise how good it really is when it's carrying a load. I've ridden most of the passes in the lakes with a light camping load, and even felt comfortable descending harknott.
well in another post you seemed to imply you have other bikes then sell one of them instead to raise cash for the new one?
It's the bike I use least!
I've got a Thorn audax that is perfect for lightweight touring. It's a great all-rounder, and i use it too much to sell.
I make the effort now and again to go places that the thorn won't go, using green lanes in the lakes, just to use the Sardar. Tbh it's only once or twice a year, as none of my mates have bikes that will cope. If the bike sells I can use my hardtail to get off the beaten track if I ever feel the need.
I ride with a road club in the week, so need a decent fast bike to keep up. I get dropped enough as it is...I'd be toast if I turned up on the thorn.
I fancy an Airnimal folder...
Good enough answer?
