Re: FRAME STIFFNESS

Very interesting thread, and I don't feel qualified to add anything technical except that I ride a Flying Gate design (Jarvis) and I find it wonderfully stiff and responsive laterally at the back, especially when climbing or sprinting out of the saddle. However the trail on the fork makes for a spri...

Re: American wants to do LEJOG - equipment and accommodation

Hi Tim, check out https://www.warmshowers.org too. We've had some interesting visitors and made some friends. Bike - no worries. Thorn Audax has a rear rack. Be in contact if things don't work out and you need a bike in a hurry. SF - nice, stayed in Berkeley for a few months many years ago...

Re: American wants to do LEJOG - equipment and accommodation

I've got a Thorn Audax in about 21 - 22 inch (never measured it) that you can borrow for the summer - Its a triple with downtube shifters and is my 'winter' bike. Good mile muncher - If it fits you are welcome.

Re: My New Bike

Its also worth experimenting with the damping - keep the centre bolt on the linkages tight and slacken or tighten the other linkage bolts. They are deliberately on Nylocs to prevent them vibrating off. More things to experiment with. After fettling one recently I was surprised at how much the front ...

Re: My New Bike

Moulton APB triple conversion. That's my front suspension fork tube polisher. I've used a light oil in the tube where the nylon bushing is and Moly grease on the spring - moly grease is not supposed to 'stick' as much. Front now takes all road buzz out. Moulton is Flat barred with Grip Shift changers.

Re: My New Bike

The geometry will change when you take your hands off the bars too... less weight on the front.

Re: My New Bike

Good Choice MickF. I've just converted for a friend a Moulton APB 8 speed Gripshift to a 3 by 8 using a Campag Chainset and long cage mech, still using grip shift as he prefers flat bars. Looks bonny. Also this bike suffered a little from 'stiction' in the from suspension - the nylon bung that goes ...

Re: Chater Lea BB

Hi there, The link posted the mention of the "Nice Fork" contains errata? Mention is made of the Baines Flying Gate, stating that it was originally called The Whirlwind! No, it was properly called "The Baines V.S. 37". The 37 refers to the wheelbase. Rather fancy a new one. But ...

Re: Tyres and flint shards

Was going to suggest the old school flint catchers as we used to call them. Knock the flint off before the next revolution of the wheel helps push them in further. Seen all sorts including bits of old wire run between the brake bosses... look like a recipe for a trip over the handlebars!

Re: Frame Colour

Arthur Caygill are in Richmond in North Yorkshire - a lovely place to visit! While you are up you can ride some of the Tour Stages! Super job a great shop. They are excellent frame builders too. BTW - I too had a Tange headset fitted - it was the only one low enough to fit. I had purchased a lovely ...

Re: Frame Colour

Sorry to hear of your journey with this one. Just to 'big up' Arthur Caygill who also do resprays - they recently did my Caygill Road frame that was in a poor state, mind you to keep things simple I went for the original colour scheme of 'pearlescent white' and black lug lining circa 1994... now the...

Re: Campag veloce?

I guess it will be veloce 2013 Check out http://www.campagnolo.com/UK/en/Support/download?td=3 You'll see an 'exploded view' of the lever - may help. I'm still searching for an elusive EC-CE013 part to fix a pair I've got... BTW - pop riveting on front mechs sounds dodgy! Like you I'm on a steel bike!

Re: Campag veloce?

Hi Big Jim, never had a worry with Veloce. I've attached a photo of a spare LH lever showing the snug nipple pressed home. It's a beginners question but you have released the lever by pressing the thumb lever and pulling the cable so that the lever can actually pull some cable when you operate the l...

Re: Heart rate monitor help.

Once you have found your maximum HR then the unit will accurately show you your % effort or Zone. Some people use zones for their HR training - google training with HR zones and you'll see. I use my HR % as a measure of how hard I'm trying, good for long rides where you want to pace yourself, for me...

Re: What tubs??

Tape - easier to apply and you can still peel off a punctured tub easy enough. Just by some of the cheaper 'training' tubs from the likes of Vittoria. Enjoy! Don't think about p*******S when riding!
