Though neat looking (always in favour of free stuff, particularly fuel) I can't help but see them as a picnic novelty.
And if you have to carry your own fuel with the thing, bison litter or whatever, what's really the point/advantage?
And that bison litter doesn't strike me as particularly economical/green - just think of the carbon footprint needed to get it to you.

well the wood burners are so small and compact you could try your luck and not take any fuel just use twigs etc. Maybe have a secondary cooker as a backup if you cant find any twigs. since it is really a hollow cylinder you can always store some thing else in it. I have only used mine once when at Tanners Hatch YHA as there were ample twigs lying around - I was allowed to use that even when the open fires were forbidden due to fire risk

Re: Audiobooks ?

if you dont want to read but listen many ebook readers will also speak the text. The speech is tolerable once you get used to it. There are lots of sources for free ebooks. And many libraries have ebook libraries but the problem there is they are encrypted so your reader needs to be one that the library supports.

Re: FILUMS ..to see.

Not sure if I have mentioned this before. I was looking thru my media centre and remembered the film called "The Warriors" which is the story of street gangs in 1950-60 New York. It is rather stylised than gritty . It starts off with Cyrus the leader of a dominant gang calling a meeting of all the gangs in the city to cooperate to take over the city. Money we are led to believe pays one of the gangs to shoot him when he is delivering his opening speech. The shooter casts suspicion on another gang, the Warriors, one of whose members saw him do it. So we follow the gang as they try to get home before being lynched by the various gangs on the way. Really gripping stuff. I have the dvd that is surprisingly good quality.

The frustrating thing is that this statement is probably true in that (having had over 2 months of free travel) the new strain is almost certainly present in most other countries but that most places won't have as thorough a genetic sequencing programme as we do. The problem with taking a xenophobic approach to a pandemic is that, as with Donald Trump and his 'Wuhan flu' or 'China virus,' finger-pointing is used by those in charge as an alternative to actually doing something effective.

The ref to London, which is a melting pot of the world, rather than cities in the north is significant.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/dec/22/new-variant-coronavirus-genomic-sars-cov-2-pandemic?

One question that may never be answered is where the new variant came from. The first place we detected it, by looking back through virus samples, was in Kent and London. But it’s not clear whether it actually emerged there. It’s worth remembering that the UK undertakes much more Sars-CoV-2 sequencing than many other countries, and the fact that we’ve found it here may say more about that than about its ultimate origin.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9079333/How-Britain-shot-foot-best-world-sequencing-viruses.html

The COG-UK consortium is on its own responsible for generating and making publicly available more than 100,000 genomes of the disease, accounting for 50 per cent of the contributions from the rest of the world combined.

Top virologists in the US admitted today the strain could have emerged there and went undetected because America's genomics scheme is 'sporadic', while Covid variants with near-identical genetic make up have been reported in South Africa and Brazil.

Belgian's top Covid expert said the 'variant has already spread more than we think', and claimed it was not 'completely fair' to slap travel bans on the UK simply because its advanced genome sequencing had detected the mutation first.

Re: Gas stove or petrol?

as well as the woood burner I also have a colemans petrol stove. Riding a motor bike just syphon some from the m/c tank. The only trouble is there is very little control its either full burn or nothing really. I haven yet had a blocked fuel line that is supposed to be the problem with petrol. I would have thought less of a problem than when it was leaded petrol? coleman liquid is far to expensive.

I have to say that I haven't had any problems with the grate clogging. I fill it two thirds full and get around thirty five minutes of a burn. More than enough for a brew or a one pot meal. I have burned foraged fuel in the shape of twigs, leaves, sheeps wool and pine cones. The pine cones burned very well indeed and spitted and cracked away nicely. I use white block fire lighters to start it and carry a couple of disposable fag lighters.
The whole lot comes in a litle draw string pouch, measuring around six inches by eight.

I think I meant the cat litter due to small size covers the base not allowing air to rise thru the grill holes. But you are right a very useful simple device that works well and packs small and you can put some of the fuel inside the packed thing for carrying.

The EU is asking the member states to remove the travel ban with the UK. Individual states can, of course, exercise their own border controls. Who would have thought!

Since the new strain was prevalent in London it was probably brought in by EU people coming here in the first place.

So the 1980s film Flash Gordon has got an advisory warning for Ming the terrible being played by a whitey rather than an asian ( Max Von Sydow.) I dont understand the argument as Ming the terrible aint human so cant be asian or not duh          Talk about wokeness gone wrong

British film censor claims Flash Gordon villain Ming the Merciless is a 'discriminatory stereotype' and 'offensive' for being played by a white actor as it puts warning on 1980s movie

British Board of Film Classification has added a warning to Flash Gordon film
The board warns viewers may find Ming the Merciless character 'offensive'
Late Swedish actor Max von Sydow portrayed east Asian villain in 1980 movie

I am not sure if its that Sydow is really a whitey or that the asian character is a badey. It seems the former
