Re: Longest UK off-road surfaced cycle route?

Not strictly a cycle route, but certainly doable on a MTB and my friend completed the route on his non-suspension hybrid. We rode from Leeds to Leigh in Greater Manchester along the Leeds to Liverpool Canal and did not go on the road at all. I have written it up on my blog here. http://www.leisurecy...

Re: LEJOG on a scooter

I did the Etape Cymru on a Finnish Kickbike/Scooter last year.

The hills are not the worst thing, it is actually long stretches on the flat and the relentless pounding of your ankles.

Fair play to him though. That is a stunning achievement.

Caledonian Canal - On a Brompton?

Due to the possible rail strike next week and the general chaos that ensues, I am thinking of taking the Brompton up to Scotland. I did plan on riding the Caledonian Canal, but if we get put on a Rail Replacement a full size bike is not going to work. Also if services are busy, then getting a bike o...

Re: Confusingly signed cycle routes

Having vastly improved signage would improve the cycle network dramatically. It is a quick win and I suppose a relatively cheap one too compared to vast infrastructure projects. Yesterday I rode from Runcorn to Birkenhead and followed NCN 5 for most the way. However the route appeared 'out of the bl...

Re: caledonian canal

Thanks for the replies.

That helps. Each website seems to tell a different story and as there is no official signage (as such), I just wanted an answer from those who knew the area or had completed the route.

Re: caledonian canal

Does anyone have a GPS track of the off-road route (non-A82) route? - Fort William to Inverness.

I am also a tad confused by the route. I plan to do this on my MTB, though my hybrid would be more practical to take. I understand the A82 is a bit of a no-go, but what is the best route?

Upgraded cycle path - Worsley (Greater Manchester)

The old railway line that runs from Monton to Little Hulton has been upgraded as far as Walkden. This route goes along the NCN 55 along the old trackbed. Previously the surface was in a poor condition, but now has super smooth tarmac and connects to the limestone hard-packed surface making journeys ...

What a website?!

I have always wondered if a site like this exists. This is the kind of information resource that should be a fixture on the Sustrans website for example.

Re: Cheap tickets on Northern Rail

I always try and scout these unlimited day travel tickets out. They should be a permanent fixture on Northern Rail and have enabled me to get to places in the north that are overly expensive normally from Manchester e.g. Whitehaven or Worksop using with a ride back to somewhere in Northern Rail Land...

Re: Is a decent cheap folding bike available?

I bought a Land Rover 'Dahon' recently and with some minor changes, have created a bike that is both nimble and fast. Here is a step-by-step... Add on some 20 x 1.5 Schwalbe Marathon tyres. The rolling speed is much greater with the same effort. Koo Bikes in Plymouth have some on clearance for £13 p...

There is a self-guided option along this route organised by a German company, but sold via a UK one...

It includes luggage transfers, maps etc and bike hire (normally Kalkhoff hybrid type) in the price.

Re: Caledonian Canal

I am struggling to find details of the towpath condition of the route. Is there is photo guide? I understand that the canal towpath does not go all of the way too.

There are very few YouTube videos of someone cycling the route. Would a hybrid bike be suitable?

Lough Neagh Cycle Path - Surface?

I have been looking at going around the Lough Neagh Cycle Path. Can anyone tell me if it is tarmac all of the way and the state of the surface please?
