Re: Getting brake block surface parallel with rim
Disadvantage with letting them wear in to the correct angle is that you need to throw them out prematurely? Over 40 years that must add up!

Getting brake block surface parallel with rim
Either the front or the back of new brake pads is closer to the rim. Would be nice to get them as near to flush as possible.
I have some washers from old brake pads, some concave and some convex and I have the idea that these worked in pairs to enable adjustments to the angle of the pad. However it looks to me as if you would need one set on each side of the caliper arm for this to work. Is this the purpose of this kind of washer, or am I imagining it?
Weinmann centrepulls, in case you were wondering. Thanks for any info.

Re: Riding on just a QR spindle with a broken axle
Thanks... I am curious by nature in the face of consensus, so with respect could you explain how an axle is fine but a QR skewer is not?

Re: Riding on just a QR spindle with a broken axle
120mm dropouts spread a little to accept a reduced OLN 6 speed block.
24 quid may as well be 1024 right now. I will be going away to make my fortune soon so will invest in my bike when I get back.
I had a few broken axles back in the days before freehubs but I always picked up on them quickly. This is a cartridge hub and the bearings are firmly in place as is the bit of axle underneath them. There is no play whatsoever in the wheel.
Concerned about the risk to dropouts and welcome informed comment about this, but otherwise I am going to keep riding it, unless someone can give me a good argument as to why I will wreck my (beloved) frame.

Riding on just a QR spindle with a broken axle
Been doing this for a while, maybe quite a while since I am not sure when the axle snapped. Possibly 500 miles plus. I am avoiding situations in traffic, but there is hardly any traffic on my regular routes so this is not a big issue.
Anyone got experience about how long it takes for a QR spindle to break in these circumstances? Is there any danger of damage to the dropouts?

Re: Getting a new axle for a Quando cartridge bearing hub
Thanks Gaz
The bearings are a standard 6000 type. Does this mean I can find an axle? But where?
New hub from Spa is 24 pounds inc postage. As well as the axle I will get two spare bearings with this. But if there is any way to do it cheaper I would be happy, because I haven't got any money at the moment.

It's the type with shoulders for the bearings. I hadn't heard about the other type you mentioned, but would one of them do the job instead if I can get hold of one?

Re: Fitting Hub Cartridge Bearings
I used to tap the new bearings in but then I started pressing them using a large washer just fitting over the axle, and tightening it using the axle locknut and maybe spacers. I used grease between the bearing and hub. This seemed to work OK as far as my experience went.

Getting a new axle for a Quando cartridge bearing hub
I am hoping to find a replacement axle for a Quando freewheel hub of the type listed here:
http://spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m2b0s117p2596
It's a cartridge bearing hub so only the specific axle will do as far as I am aware. Any ideas about where I might locate this? Don't want to rebuild the wheel unless there is absolutely no other option. Incidentally the original axle lasted very well for a freewheel design.
