Re: Map Measure -Pen with roller wheel.!

Paulactic flat maps and total distance?
It really depends on organisers relative experience.
Only rode 3 AUDAX GRIMPEURS ,
Late Tim Peregrine's 200 k from Monmouth, Brecon Beacons /Black mountains
200k "Goose-eye Grimpeur Pennines
200k Keith Benton's N/York moors Grimpeur
All accurate; doubtless tried and tested by very experienced audaxers.
Also on 6 L'Tape's perfect accuracy.

I never did ride British SPORTIF, though rode many French events; too dangerous.
I expect eventually there will be tighter control AFTER there is, inevitable, catastrophic crash with traffic.

Previously asked what's the difference between a SPORTIF and an AUDAX?
In a SPORTIF riders are all pretending to race1
In an AUDAX riders are pretending not to!

Re: Map Measure -Pen with roller wheel.!

Thanks to all for your prompt and helpful response.
Result is measurer, £ 5, due to arrive 7th. march.
I had tried previously but only found "digital meters " $ 75/$120

Apologies for delayed acknowledgement.

i remembered earlier this week about my post and was very pleased with replies so so, so slowly typed out replies to everyone.
Full marks from "Age Concern"!
I then went back a screen to check details
And lost it all.

Next night typed it out again but used the icon at top of screen.
Tried to post but --"you need to log in"!!
lost al again!!.

That's what happens to giddy geriatrics.

I did mention reports from first "Fred Witton" lakes Sportif that riders recorded distances were approx 10% greater than route info indicated?
That's what happens with flat maps!

After originally joined CTC in 1958 after reading old copies of "Gazzette" at youth hostel at Red house Crosscliff, Wear Tees and Eskdale , NY moors I resigned , previous 10 years as chair of oldest DA, Northumbria, when oap discount ended.
"fings aint what they used to be.

Have litttle contact but I did suggest that there was potential for huge positive national publicity if CUK provided cyclist courier services for the new, but in fact hardly used covid hospitals .

Map Measure -Pen with roller wheel.!

PLEASE Anyone have one of these sat idle in a draw?

Looks like, similar size to' those four colour pens that are so popular with NHS nurses..
No ballpoint , instead a small roller wheel and a window to read the indicated distance.

Clubmate, used mine for route writing for AUDAX's, has passed on.

Can't help you directly with this issue.
I am aware of section you specifically mention- and a treacherous tramline wide crack downstream.

DO WEAR YOUR HELMET!

Few years ago local rider was awarded £1,000,000 damages against Gateshead council suffering epilepsy after crash due to tree roots.
Defence argued that not wearing helmet was contributory negligence so damages reduced to £750,000.

Perhaps CUK can update you on local representative?

Been a victim, twice.

Effective deterrent?

Same effect on victim as stealing a cowboy's horse so surely always--

Re: WATCH BBC 1 tonight @8pm panorama

We seem to have drifted out of our lane onto "pavement" parking?

My concern is how we cyclists are perceived and treat by public, police and even judiciary.

Can anyone explain why driver of car who, apparently decided that mini roundabouts don't apply to them then consequently collided with, fortunately for him, a young, alert robust cyclist who avoided going under the car, did not get jailed and made to re-take driving test.
With, in both cases, number plate recognition and film footage, what action was taken against driver astride double white lines.
There is no deterrent "pour encourage les autres".

Along with pavement parking anyone know of driver being*fined for driving or parking in a cycle lane?

Hazardous for cyclists.
No problem for drivers?

Will it need a resulting fatality to instigate *this?

Logically photographic evidence should result in prosecution in every case in manner of parking on clearway, double yellow lines or "bus lane" type fines.

Don't hold your breath!

WATCH BBC 1 tonight @8pm panorama

Perceptions from the motoring public!!

Not surprised by the numbers.

Three years ago, after local BBC news quote " 80-year-old cyclist has died from injuries following collision with car at 8.30 at Shinclifffe this morning" I was asked by non-cycling friends if he had been wearing a helmet and comments about riding a bike on a main road at that age?

The wing mirror of TESSLA had hit Freds undersaddle toolbag.

Jury found driver Aidan Tate not guilty of causing death by careless driving.

WHY?
Probably 10 of twelve were themselves drivers, had latched on to opening defence that cyclist wearing dark clothing, so they wouldn't want to go to jail for a moment's inattention when perceivably bike shouldn't be on a main road!

Victim blaming.

How many driver now whose parents decided bikes on roads too dangerous so they never cycled themselves?

Re: Best drinks bottle - recommendations?

And consider cap size?
Avoid small neck..
When there are days like today you want barman to fill bottle with ice cubes then top it up he won't be happy putting in one cube at a time.
Might do it for one but not 2 or?

And drinks?
We have come a long way since the "50's", racing on RIBENA or for some, cold tea!
Recommend peppermint cordial; quite refreshing.

Bonne route!

Whatever you finally decide on if you are near Wooler or Kirk Yetholm do consider visit to College Valley , site of beautiful memorial to planes lost on Cheviot in WW2.
Can't recall American plane, survivors so impressed with shepherd dogs which found them they had pup flown out to states in with transports of pilots for ferrying new planes back to uk.
And one airman finally had his ashes scattered on Cheviot.

Accommodation bargain--sunday nights at Wetherspoons hotels are ,typically, £39 for twin or double room; if over the border, recommend Cross Keys at Peebles.

Re: Drivers over penalty points allowed to drive?

simoneaston thank you for this timely suggestion to escape all this bickering and bloody-mindedness.
I don't have access to facebook but must be more entertaining than al the conflict which has evolved from a fellow cyclist seeking information to present best possible response to charges.
Also your earlier, so sensible post.
Pay up and shut up, that's next job.

Damascene reversal was inspired by Pete Owens!

This is a forum so we must expect widely different opinions.
Here you challenge every point in jonathan's post supporting me.
Do you, have you ever driven?

Why are you so "hell bent" on fellow cyclist not having penalties reduced after he has admitted UNWITTINGLY twice driven in bus -lane while we have over 4000 drivers convicted on totting up procedure yet still allowed, because they have expensive brief to reduce sentence.

To those of you who were interested enough to reply thank you.
I shall try to reply to different points.

I don't understand what point you are trying to make???

---**-If you read my original post I was seeking numbers of drivers "banned" but still, unpunished and allowed to drive, to argue that
the legal process allowed reduced or even cancelled penalties and that my "mitigating circumstances" had been ignored because here
"Joe public" didn't have the might/ eloquence of a posh brief to get me off the hook.

As I understand it you are not disputing the facts of the case.-----------correct- they provide photos- no contest, guilty.
You drove in a bus lane - you got caught - you got a fine - pay up.---- No I drove in two bus lanes in 5 minutes, two fines.

The only grounds for appeal would be if you hadn't in fact driven in the bus lane. Perhaps you could provide witnesses to testify that you were in Aberdeen on the day in question, or the car in the photo was not yours, but someone using fake plates or, the signs indicating the bus lane were missing. But you seem to be offering a sob story about your circumstances and claiming to be a nice person (though rather denting that image by your nasty victim-blaming reference about pedestrians with phones).

Do you drive?
You do seem more familiar than myself about possible grounds for fine cancelation?

Actually in one case on second set of photos they sent, with more details of my offences which I wasn't denying anyway, a pedestrian is shown crossing immediately in front of me as I entered the bus lane.
I might have been in a lot more trouble if I had been looking at bus lane sign!!

"Sob story"? that's my truth , that's what happened.
You can accept or discard it.

Do you support /endorse jay-walking pedestrians stepping into traffic while using their phones?
I most definitely don't

Re: Drivers over penalty points allowed to drive?

Jonathan- thank you.
You are right .

I am annoyed with myself for mistake of my naïve reliance on non-driver for navigation but then we had little choice. We had to get his sole nominated hospital visitor to Sheffield Northern General to wheel him out of building to meet us.
It worked.

Now I am annoyed that Sheffield City are ignoring what they, apparently, interpret as a sob-story.
It's not about the £60-its because I feel fobbed off-we don't deserve this.

I shall do as you suggest.
