Re: NCN5 Blockage due to Roadworks

I contacted Sustrans and, as luck would have it, their representative will be at the county council tomorrow so will bring it up with them.

Re: NCN5 Blockage due to Roadworks

The red book is an interesting read but I don't think I've ever seen a "Road Closed Except Cycles" sign as described on page 70. I think they'd struggle to provide the widths specified - they were putting a huge sewer pipe in last time I went to look which took up most of the road so I'd b...

Re: NCN5 Blockage due to Roadworks

Thanks. It sounds as though I'll just have to go a different way for the next month or so. I'll call the council again to express my opinion, even if only so they know people use the lane.

NCN5 Blockage due to Roadworks

Hello My commute goes along NCN5 north of Stafford but the road has been closed this week and will remain so for a month due to roadworks associated with a new housing development. http://roadworks.org/?tmi=5878122 The proposed diversion is up the A34 but the whole point of the NCN going that way is...

Re: TA bottom bracket threading on tandem

Well, as advised I've left the fixed cups in and cleaned it out from the other side. I got fed up after cleaning out two bottom brackets full of very sticky 30-year-old grease so I'll put it all back together in the morning. Cups look okay, fortunately. There's not a great deal I could do about it i...

TA bottom bracket threading on tandem

Hello Following on from this thread in July this year (we've had the tandem for that long? We really need to get out out on it more - roll on spring time) I've got a replacement chainring from spa cycles and, while I've got the cranks off, it seemed worthwhile overhauling the bottom brackets. My fee...

Re: Tandem gearing upgrades

We took the bike up and over Cannock Chase yesterday, which is by far our hilliest ride so far. We are learning to share out the effort more evenly on the ascents, especially when we run out of low gears. We made it up though, so I'm not in too much of a hurry to make massive changes. Is yours a Mot...

Re: Tandem gearing upgrades

Thanks everybody. That's plenty of information to get us going. I'll let you know how we get on and maybe even post a photo from the top of the first hill we get up! Is that the Peugeot I saw for sale recently? No this is a Motobecane. We went for it because the seller was local and willing to deliv...

Tandem gearing upgrades

Hello We've picked ourselves up a tandem off ebay for a bit of fun. The essential first piece of maintenance was to replace the brake pads, which looked like they were the same mid 70's vintage as the bicycle. Now that the vehicle can be stopped we've embarked on some test rides, which are getting p...

Do driving instructors belong to some sort of regulatory body that you could complain to?

Newsbeat article re conviction rates

Here is the transcript of a radio 1 report into conviction rates for deaths of cyclists. http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/28345522 I don't think there's anything in there that hasn't been discussed at length in this forum but it is interesting that radio 1 are covering it. Do they think their audience ...

Re: cycle lane width

IMO, the only advantage cycle lanes give to most cyclists is in heavy traffic. . . . Otherwise, what cycle lanes do is create opportunities for left hooks. I prefer to filter on the right to avoid the left hooks but cycle lanes tend to move the motor traffic towards the centre line and there...

Re: New Mirror

I tried a bar-end mirror for a few months but took it off last time I re-did my bar tape. I found that the mirror was too far away from my normal eye line to be useful - by the time I peered down to see what was behind me I could have glanced over my shoulder and gathered more information more quick...

Re: Disappointed in the number of RLJ's

My commute involves a traffic-light-controlled junction where a one-way street crosses a busier road. The one-way street is too narrow for me to get towards the front of the queue so I join on the back and amuse myself by guessing which motor vehicles in front of me will jump the amber light and whi...
