Single choice makes it rather pointless ...

I did say if you have done more than one choose the one you did most. If there were multiple options then this wouldn't indicate how many respondents had raced.

It's as useless as a great number of posts on this forum. If it is of no interest to individuals there don't have to take part.

It says quite clearly what the "aim" is. Is that not another way of expressing the purpose?
Don't bother - you seem to make a sport of selective reading.

Darts, aim at expressing or improving physical fitness????
You're right there's no point in bothering, you don't even read what you have written.

Ask Sport England, they're the ones using it as a definition.
I'd say probably not, as it has a purpose beyond the physical activity. It's that idea of purpose, rather than competition, which separates sport and utility cycling.

There's nothing in the definition you quoted about purpose.

Edit. Just looked at Sports England and in 2005 they recognised darts as a sport. This requires about as much physical effort as making a cup of tea but it is competitive, perhaps you could ask them why they did this.

Just looked up a definition of 'sport'
an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
As such the number of people cycling and taking part in sport must be tiny and it's therefore pretty evident that cycling is not just a sport. People can wear what they please when cycling and should not feel under pressure to conform to someone else's perception of what the correct apparel is.

Here's another definition:
"Sport means all forms of physical activity, which through casual or organised participation, aim at expressing or improving physical fitness and mental well-being, forming social relationships or obtaining results in competition at all levels"
That's the one from the Council of Europe charter on sport and is used by Sport England to determine if an activity is a sport or not.
I thought it was well understood that competition was only a small part of sports and that the wider meaning is what was clearly meant in the opening post.

For many gardening would be a sport using that.

Waste of a link. SCR is haphazard not organised. Can you find a link to the Norwegian U23 men's SCR champion for 2005? Might give you something to pass half an hour.

Are you adding an scr option or not?

No, that would be silly.

A couple of years ago there was a bridge over a road in Bristol that needed to be replaced. They started work on Friday at midnight and finished in the early hours of Sunday. Some complained that this work disrupted motor traffic on Saturday. About the same time a foot bridge was being installed over a foot and cycle path in Bath. This took over 6 months and the foot/cycle path was closed for all of this time and the traffic diverted to a main road.

I will say nothing on my performance except that I wasn't last in either. Bloody hell though, the 25 was painful!

Nice to have a go, but it won't become a regular occurrence.

I fancy doing a hill climb sometime, but am getting rapidly too decrepit and there's the small matter of needing to lose 3 stone or so...

Cycling is a sport, a pastime and a mode of transport. I'm not sure why that would be controversial to anyone.

[Edit: accidentally voted for road race, can't see how to change. I did do a couple of sportives in France which had actual winners and such, so I guess it's still honest, though I definitely wasn't racing in those, merely surviving to the end]

I thought I selected option to change selection.

Before anyone gets too steamed up it's a poll. It will not be used to make a point or anything else.

I fear you're going to misinterpret that a majority of transport and touring cyclists once entered some race (possibly even egged on by others at a certain touring club that included sport as one of its aims) as evidence that cycling is necessarily a sport.

I'll take that as a no.

Have you ever taken part in a cycle race?

As it is sometimes said that cycling shouldn't be consider as just a sport I was wondering how many people on here had take part in a cycle race.
For the purpose of this poll a cycle race is; an organised (by some governing body) event where there is a declared winner. If you want to include 'me and my mates used to race each other' please start your own poll.
As the poll won't allow more than one option can you select the option you did most.
