The UK has shot up from its previous ranking of seventh in 2021, United Nations data has shown, rising three places in 2022, the most recent year available.

In doing so, it has overtaken France, the Netherlands and Japan in the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

Al, could you supply a link to the figures please, so the cynics amongst us can see the figures? Thanks
https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/re ... %20deficit.

In 2023, the UK’s exports of goods and services totalled £865 billion and imports totalled £898 billion. The EU accounted for 41% of UK exports of goods and services and 52% of imports in 2023.
The UK generally imports more than it exports meaning that it runs a trade deficit. A deficit of £187 billion on trade in goods was offset by a surplus of £153 billion on trade in services in 2023. The overall trade deficit was £33 billion in 2023.
The UK had a trade deficit with the EU of £109 billion in 2023 and a trade surplus of £75 billion with non-EU countries.
The trade deficit with all countries decreased to £5.1 billion in the three months to February 2024 compared with the previous three months. Exports increased by 0.1% and imports decreased by 1.3% in cash terms over this period.

The current account, which includes investment income and transfers as well as trade, saw a deficit of £89 billion in 2023, compared with £77 billion in 2022. The current account deficit was 3.3% of GDP in 2023 compared with 3.1% in 2022.
The current account deficit increased to £21.2 billion in Q4 2023 (3.1% of GDP), compared with a deficit of £18.5 billion (2.7% of GDP) in Q3 2023.

How successful is your local CTC/CUK group?

Given the average age of CTC/CUK members:

CTC /CUK local group rides/events, what is the average age of the participants?

Does any group have unaccompanied under-18-year-olds on their rides/events?

Over the last year, how many new members have attended your CTC /CUK local group?

What was their age?

Male/Female?

This article highlights the campaigning by IWGB - Cycling branch to secure improved terms and conditions for cycle instructors.

I would expect many on here may have heard of this campaign given members of this site are keen cyclists.

https://iwgb.org.uk/en/page/iwgb-cyclin ... rs-branch/

Who we are
We’re the Cycling Instructors’ Branch of IWGB.

(For the uninitiated, cycling instructors teach bike control skills and safe road riding to adults and children. We also teach cyclist awareness courses to professional drivers, run all-ability cycling sessions and teach beginners to ride.)

Our branch started in London, where the cycle training industry has been established longest, and where we now represent a significant percentage of the instructor workforce. As the government’s Bikeability programme goes national, we’re recruiting more and more members across England.

Why we’re here
Cycling instructors work on casual contracts, are poorly paid and are vulnerable to management “initiatives” to push costs and risks onto workers. There’s been no pay rise for decades. Instructors were hammered by the Covid pandemic and the industry is struggling to retain experienced instructors, let alone recruit new ones. We’re passionate about the job, but many of us can’t afford to stay in it.

In November 2019 we decided that enough was enough, and formed a branch with IWGB. ..............

I wouldn’t recommend the use of three in one oil in an SA hub. Three in one might penetrate, lubricate and protect but the protection includes laying down of a layer of gum. I suspect that lots of folk have used three in one for years, topping their hub up on a regular basis, but when the top-ups stop and it dries out guess what happens …
What lubrication would you recommend. SA do not make their own lubricant anymore.
Fixed that for you, I hope that that’s OK. :)

There are some good threads on what oil folk use, what’s near to the original SA oil and what’s even better. I use Singer Sewing Machine oil (which is a light machine oil) in my SA AW, there might be a gain to be found using something different but (to me at least) that oil seems to be ‘in the right ball park’ - and similar to the originally used SA oil. Over the counter (ie. in a shop) Singer oil is around £3-50 per bottle, prices will vary by location, and it’s widely available by mail-order too. Though I’ve not used it SAE 20 motor mower oil is, I believe, a sound choice too.

Have you seen this, is it any good?

Sa was working fine yesterday, today gave cleaned and replaced all cables.

I also gave SA flush though with 3 in-1 oil.
I remove the control rod in top gear.
I put the control rod in and pulled it, but it had resistance!

I tried some more 3 IN 1 but it only helped slightly.

Does it need a disassembling?

I ONLY 45 MILES, I used to ride it in 3 hours when I was a student at Plymouth Poly.

Is the bit you had trouble with poking the wires through the two holes without them catching, like the second step in these photos?

It can be fiddly but twisting the strands helps, and like Brucey said ensuring that the holes are clear and unobstructed. Solid core wire would be easier to thread but it's not suitable. It is stiff and will break over time because it's not flexible enough.

Did you manage to get it done ok in the end anyway despite it being a faff?

For what is worth, I wouldn't worry too much about cable covers etc, the plug itself isn't designed to be waterproof and water gets in between the plug and the tab it fits onto anyway. The best thing to do is put contact spray/other suitable substance on it so that it doesn't corrode. Current is not high enough for the presence of water to create electrical problems. I think that I'm right in this but would be interested to hear other opinions. In any case I've only had problems with corrosion but not the presence of water itself.
