Re: Changing brake system..

Hope you don't mind an observation, constructively meant....

Your chain is quite cruddy and bone dry (no lubrication). It would greatly benefit from a good clean, dry and lubrication. It should then run and shift better & last longer. Downside will be tell-tale oily marks on your right calf.

There are experts on here well versed in the art of chain cleaning and lubrication if you need guidance, or do a search - it's been covered once or twice.

Re: where one can try on cycling shoes...

My good wife decided to treat me to new shoes for Christmas so I was dispatched off to try on shoes and report back so she could buy them.

Not easy. Went to LL in Derby/Notts who had only 2 or 3 pairs in randon sizes. Assistant was helpful and advised that I purchase on line for collection at the shop. Once delivered I could try on and buy or not, as I thought fit. Would need to pay for all ordered shoes in advance.

Thought this might be just poor stock at our shop so called in to the LL shop at Manchester cycling Centre - same there although the assistant did not suggest any ordering on line for delivery to the shop.

In the end as Halfords had a sale on I odered two pairs to be delivered to local branch (who keep no stock at all). The Halfords ordering system did not work well, I was promised an email when they were dispatched, no email came and no way to ring the branch but sure enough when I popped in the two pairs were there. None of the staff has a clue what the shoes had been sent for so they were put in the oddments cupboard. Tried them on and bought one pair.

So got internet sale prices but with the ability to try on and not have to send back.

Re: starting my own magazine

First thing would not be to place the text in front of the bikes, people are keen to look at the details, components etc. Good luck with your venture.

Re: Mercian Vincitore Special and King of Mercia - values

Not really the best place to sell an item like this (Gumtree) and not well presented in the photos. If you really are trying to get the best price, the advice in the posts above should be considered.

Re: Mercian Vincitore Special and King of Mercia - values

eBay will yield the widest possible market and get you the best prices. Worth spending time presenting and describing the bikes properly and ensuring photographs do them justice.
Obviously sell them separately and ensure you offer to courier. Item 'collect only' make less money, particularly in far flung places.

Re: Medical issues and VAT exemption on bikes.

Just a thought - If you were get a bike or frame "made to order - bespoke" by one of the many builders, would IR accept the invoice suitably marked up with appropriate wording indicating the changes made. Also, doctors these days, for a fee, can be encouraged to write a letter of support. Dunno, perhaps both of these things might be acceptable? Good luck

Re: Lanyard for Etrex

Lanyard fits to the bottom of the unit , just below the 'GARMIN' writing. It has an orange coloured opening on the Etrex 20.

Re: Lanyard for Etrex

There are numerous on Ebay starting at a fiver. If that is too much and you are not concerned about appearance, a simple length of thin strong cord tied in a loop will suffice. Poke one end through the metal loop and thread through itself.

Failing that there are loads of folk continually upgrading and changing units, post a wanted add.

Re: Splayed drop handlebars AKA off road drops

Have a look at 'bullhorn' bars, easily created by turning over conventional drop bars, then cutting the ends off them.

Your project would probably have got more replies and interest if you posted under a separate thread, rather than jumping aboard an established thread. People here are too polite. Hope you don't mind me mentioning it.

Re: the real world difference between PCS-9 and PCS-10

I have a proper bike stand, adjustable everything etc. but find something like this does for 95% of maintenance and adjustment. It means that work is done standing up, not kneeling or bending over a 'bottom bracket' type device. I have an hinged version of the Paddy Hopkirk so the arms do fold back out of the way when not in use.

Re: Bikes on trains

I would second the early arrival and have a good look around. We have only done it a very few times but each time seem to get caught out unawares. Last time was Bath to Reading where the train stops literally for 30 seconds. We had not spotted the cycle sign on the PLATFORM and were stood in the wrong place and had to leg it to the other end. To no avail as were were told the train would not wait (perhaps 20 seconds) and it departed.

Waited only 30 mins for the next (no bike booking for this one) train and were first on and into the guards van to suss out the arrangement for securing the bikes. Were told after perhaps 10 seconds to leave the guards van NOW PLEASE and board the train, no time to secure the bikes.

In contrast the Majorca train arrangements are a joy, dirt cheap and no hassle.

Re: Garmin Legend & Legend hxc no comms with PC

Just a thought. The USB socket on the device connects to the main board via finger contacts, gold plated. I have known units where this connection becomes 'unreliable' and the device is not recognised. Try this - Squeeze the top of the unit very hard together (both hands) with the lead attached and get an assistant to plug into the PC. If you get a connection or an intermittent one, this will indicate the problem.

Options would then be - Open it up and wire the socket direct to the board (requires some skill in soldering small parts, and a bit of bodgery) or send it back to Garmin who will either replace it under warranty, or if outside warranty, will replace it for a fee.
