Re: Highway Code revision - hierarchy of road users

OMG they are advocating using the left hand lane to turn right at a roundabout: If you are turning right you can ride in the left or right-hand lanes and move left when approaching your exit. Position yourself in the centre of your lane if it is safe to do so (see Rule 72) and signal right to indic...

Re: Highway Code revision - hierarchy of road users

I read the consultation document last night. Then read it again, and responded via the consultation website. I’ve logged in here this morning (first time in ages, I admit) to view the commentary. I recognise the points made in this topic so far. I agree with most. There’s been a significant increase...

Missing JOGLE info link?

I’m back looking at CTC Forum after being absent from discussions for ages. Reason is that I want to start planning a JOG-to-Home (Cumbria) ride, and I knew there is info on routes etc in these forums. But...... the JOGLE sticky link for info only gives “page missing”. Has it moved? If so, please ca...

Re: Winter Commuting Advice

I've commuted to & from work all year round for many years. My routine journey is only 6 miles each way - but virtually all on very minor (single track w passing places) roads and off-road cycle tracks. Yes, I've had a few bikes over the years, but wouldn't think of using my "good" bik...

Re: Is there a site that lists bicycle weights?

Weight?! I can (relatively) easily reduce my weight by a kilo or so. I have a bit to spare. To reduce my bike weight by a kilo would, I think, cost me a fortune buying carbon and ultralight parts. The drive for significantly lower bicycle weight always seems a bit fatuous beyond some limits: but the...

..... and another plus 1 for Dumfries and Galloway. West of Annan is good, west of Dumfries is better. Good cycling.

Re: Garmin Edge Touring and postcodes.

When i try to enter a postcode on my garmin it will not accept the last 2 characters then asks me for an address so is useless for route planning or use as a sat nag. . . Or am I missing something obvious ? ? ? You aren't missing anything as far as I know. I have an Edge Touring too. I had the same...

Re: Advice on new bike under Cycle to Work

I had a look at cycle solutions. So many bikes, so little time........ Some good'uns there. You make your choices, but based on 35 years of commuting, I recommend a hybrid. (For me) the essentials would be proper mudguards and a rack plus pannier(s). I wouldn't bother with suspension - I think heavy...

Re: BB bearing life?

I've been out for a spin on the newly BB bearinged bike. Silky smooth again. Good. I had asked the bike shop for the old parts, so I amused myself today by taking it apart. (This despite the "do not disassemble" warnings printed on it). Of the two bearings, one seemed good, and the other v...

Re: BB bearing life?

Yes, the bike has full-length proper mudguards.
No, the LBS didn't charge for replacing the parts. They know me, I know them. They know the bike came from them and is not yet 12 months old. No money or paper changed hands at all. (And I trust them!)

Re: my altercation

Sorry to hear of your woes.....I'm not surprised that it was a BMW......they are more aggressive, for sure. A kind of "look at me, I've made it...ha ha and look at you on a bike" mentality... Hey..... Less of the generalising. I have a BMW. It is highly reliable, cheap to run, comfortable...

Re: Indicators, the lost art?

A disappearing art, I agree.
The daily commute seems to cause loss of indicator function.
I'm convinced that many drivers thought process is something like: " I always go this way at this roundabout or junction. Everyone knows that. Why would I need to indicate?"

BB bearing life?

I bought a new Dawes Super Galaxy in the Ctw scheme last year. This bike is about 9 months old. Strangely, it has never yet been to work, it is mostly awaiting my retirement in about 15 months. I should think I've ridden it most weeks, albeit sometimes only a few miles. I've also done a few longish ...
