They're losing licence payers at a rate of 300,000 a year, so they're clearly struggling to appeal to the masses any more.

I'm happy enough. As usual the minorty who have problems are publicised to death, which the majority who are quite happy just enjoy it quietly.Jon in Sweden wrote: ↑17 Mar 2023, 9:22am But it's neither inferior or early tech. It's been established for decades. Just not in the UK.
The idea that it is inefficient, expensive to run, or poorly performing is, by and large, tosh. Much like electric cars the majority of people with a downer on air source heating are the ones who don't have it themselves, which makes me wonder that upon which they base their high fallutin' opinions.

Re: Braverman: Rise of the Fascists
No book burnings, no Krystallnacht, no roaming gangs of brownshirts beating up Jews (of which I am one), no forced state acquisition of businesses on ethnic or religious grounds, no Sunak pronouncing themselves Fuhrer (I guess it would be Lord Protector Here) and unilaterally usurping the monarchy, and so on.
So no, for all the fashionable rhetoric we are not remotely comparable to 1930's Germany and such suggestions are as puerile as they are facile. It's nothing more that petty diatribe at a time when we need a concerted and constructive response - silly name calling and childish similies and the like didn't help us avoid Brexit or yet another Tory Government, and they do zero to help us respond positively to this issue either. If anything, such silly playground behaviour could be argued to actually make these things happen by failing to provide a serious and coherent response to such right leaning proposals.

Try doing public order duties on a trail bike.pwa wrote: ↑16 Mar 2023, 6:04pm You have to wonder what the perceived advantage is of being on a horse rather than, say, on a road legal trials motorbike. Surely the latter would be more nimble and go just about anywhere, and faster. I could outrun a horse by cycling away from it in an urban environment.
A police horse is barely cantering at 15mph, a reasonable average speed for a cyclist. Flat out with rider and kit they can still bust 35mph for brief periods, so it is actually doubtful you'd be out cycling them in all but gnarliest urban environment.

I would be no use on a moon landing, on account of my tendency to run around screaming with a rubber face hugger attached to my helmet.

Dan Walker basing his opinion upon a faceplant impact, and the word of coppers and medicos with no expertise in helmet engineering seems a bit suspicious to me.
He could be right, but based upon the available evidence his lucky underpants could equally be to thank for saving his life.

Frankly I don't care. Its exactly what she said, and that's that.
I do find it interesting that the people who bleat and moan the most about electric cars are those that can not afford one for themselves. It's amazing how the objections are suddenly forgotten when they do get one.

Well, the Energy Saving Trust would get the shock or their lives if they read my before and after energy bills. Another organisation not fit for purpose telling those that are already making it work that it doesn't work

Mass Market electric cars have been available since, arguably, the arrrival of the first Leaf in 2011.
That's 12 years now. How much longer do you intend to wait and see?

We also charge ours overnight at gome a couple of times a week. Never once yet needed to charge it out and about. Mrs Dopestrong made an interesting observation - if she were out in my old diesel and the range display said 40 miles remaining she would be panicking and looking for a petrol station. Out in her e-car and the display said 40 miles left she'd be thinking "that's plenty for what I need right now."
People moan and whinge and make excuses, but once it's on your driveway you just get on with it and there are no earth shattering lifestyle changes needed to accommodate them. The objections melt away on the first day.
If you drive a car of any stripe you need to accept that you're responsible for a helluva lot of pollution. If anyone really cared they wouldn't own a car at all (or a private jet - I'm looking at you, John Kerry.)

Nah, it's the raw stock. I'd burn the stuff dipped in preservatives but it heightens the risk of chimney fires so I steer clear.Cugel wrote: ↑15 Mar 2023, 4:42pmOne hopes that fencing you combust isn't treated with them "preservatives", which preserve the wood by killing anything living that tries to eat it. I hear that burning such will poison both those in the house and those outside gulping in lungfuls of their smoke....... . A case of the preservative failing to preserve the wood (from burning to ash) and doing the opposite of preservation to the humans anywhere near the bonty-fire!Lance Dopestrong wrote: ↑15 Mar 2023, 4:13pm My gas boilermaker set for 17.5°C but rarely use it. Much better than an air source heat pump being used the rads.
But if I'm home alone, which is a lotmof the time, I tend to either just throw on a thicker cardie of else close the living room door and light the fire. My nephew is a owns a company that does fencing so I get an endless supply of offcuts which I cycle through my wood store to dry out prior to burning.

I wasn't doping. The test was merely detecting the testosterone-steroidal aftershave I was wearing at the time.
Another thing I find, being a big lad I sweat on a ride like a mass murderer on an episode of Ground Force. I could have a piano in my backpack and wouldn't sweat any worse than I would without a backpack at all. However, other folk are much less prone to leaking like me in normal conditions and probably would be happier with a rack.
Try a few methods, see what suits you best...if you haven't already.

Ah, the old something never happened there...yet... so won't happen here...ever...routine. That kind of extrapolation is dicey at best, particularly in countries like Germany where the first cracks in the dam of societal tolerance are starting to show.
It's not that I disagree with you, but the assertion you use to support it is a trifle shaky.
