Re: Speed humps - may damage immune system

Work by scientists at Kings college London shows that pollution resulting from speed humps may damage the immune system: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2020/01/09/do-have-london-throat-scrapping-speed-bumps-could-help/ This will affect everybody - not just the people driving the cars. Could sp...

Re: Folding bicycle choice for London commute

[...] this (and the folded size they consider to be a folding bicycle) varies with the train operating company. I believe that the company that tried to refine "folding bicycle" as basically Brompton size was first brought back in line and has now lost their franchises. So as long as it f...

Re: Btwin Tilt 900 (folding bike)

"You cannot 'thoyle' a Brompton, as we say here" Not sure what that means? "Do you mean, the bars cannot be adjusted at all?" You can adjust the angle of the bars to the post, so effectively lower/raise them a bit. However the height of the actual post is fixed, as I understand it.

Btwin Tilt 900 (folding bike)

Does anyone have any experience of this newish folder, and/or with Btwin folders more generally? It's a higher-end addition to Decathlon's Btwin Tilt folding range that I think came out last summer. It seems pretty cheap compared to dedicated folding brands like Tern, Dahon and of course Brompton, t...

Re: RAC on mobile phone use

I saw someone texting a few weeks ago while driving a large jeep right behind a cyclist carrying a baby on the back of her bike :( :( :(

Re: Gravel/adventure bike or MTB?

A conclusion to this thread: In the end, I went for the Marin Four Corners, on which I got a very good deal online (about £200 less than I could get the AWOL, which was also on sale, for). I got hold of it yesterday and took it for a 20k ride through the forest, including a few short bits of single ...

Re: Gravel/adventure bike or MTB?

An update for anyone still interested: The Vaya frame option fell through sadly (it was available at a good price but I couldn't get it in the right size). I've struggled to get a test ride on any of the bikes and was leaning towards just buying an AWOL and hoping for the best. However I'm also now ...

Re: Gravel/adventure bike or MTB?

Update for anyone that's interested - I live in Euroland but am paid in pounds :? - so sadly the Vaya (which is way more expensive here than the other two) is definitely out... It turns out that I may be able to get my hands on a reasonably-priced Vaya frame. Does anyone have an idea how much it wo...

I've spoken to a couple of Specialized dealers and the AWOL is sold out here (I could get one online, but I want to test ri...

Re: Gravel/adventure bike or MTB?

Thanks all for the latest replies. I'm going to try to get a test ride or at least sit on the Salsa Vaya, Kona Sutra and Specialized AWOL - though I think getting hold of a Vaya to test may be difficult. Without having ridden them, and if money were no object, I like the look of the Vaya best, excep...

Re: Gravel/adventure bike or MTB?

Does anyone have any thoughts on the 2016 Kona Sutra as a do-it-all machine that might suit my needs (day-trips and forest path rides - plus I'm increasingly hoping to be able to do a bit of touring)? http://www.konaworld.com/sutra.cfm It's marketed as a touring bike, but then so (more or less) is t...

Re: Gravel/adventure bike or MTB?

Thanks for the info. To what extent (if any) could the geometry be made more suitable through adjustments to the bike (eg raising the handlebars with spacers, changing the stem etc)? With a seatube angle of 73.5degrees for all sizes you'll most likely need a seatpost with a loonngg layback otherwis...

Re: Gravel/adventure bike or MTB?

Does anyone have any thoughts on the actual bike I'm looking at, the Mango Point AR (https://www.mangobikes.com/bikes/point-ar/)? I'd never heard of them until you provided the link. The geometry is bonkers, steep head and seat tube angles for the type of terrain you're going to use it on.Stem slamm...
