Re: Temporary Deaf / Mute DF riders ?

On a related topic I was brought up in cycling etiquette that you don't ride past someone with a mechanical without checking that they are ok. Earlier in the year I was unfortunate enough to get a puncture and out of the five people that passed me in the time it took me to fit a new tube only the ca...

Re: how worn are my chainrings?

The test usually comes when you change the chain and you start getting 'chain suck'. This is when the new chain without warn links binds to the teeth of the chainring because of the worn teeth.

Re: Steel fork query

Brake drop could be a problem at the rear with a 700c wheel. 4 mm doesn't sound a lot but if the clearance is generous with a 27" wheel then you could struggle to source a brake calliper with enough drop.

Re: Bottom bracket won't screw in

The safest course of action is to take it to your local bike shop to get it fitted. They have the right tools and if all goes wrong it is their liability.

Re: Doping culture still exists.

My suspicion is that the problem persists simply because what is expected of pro riders is simply too tough, particularly amongst the journeyman riders. The sport needs to be restructured, particularly there needs to be a rethink about the major 3 week tours. Should they be 2 weeks or should the sta...

Re: How to convince others cycle touring is safe?

You will not convince them it is safe. Generally people don't have a very good understanding of risk and a rational argument will not work. All you can do is convince them that you have thought this through so you are not being reckless, just adventurous.

Re: 53 39 front rings?

I would be concerned about the spread of gears. There is a big jump between a 53 and a 30 ring such that there is hardly any overlap between the rings. This will lead to awkward gear changes which will be very noticeable on undulating roads where the rider will spend a lot of time looking for a gear...

My hands get cold initially then warm up after a few minutes. I would say that it is because I make sure that I keep my core warm. I assume that this is because my body doesn't try keep my core warm by reducing circulation to my hands.

I have broken ribs on more than one occasion and can testify that they are much more painful than people think.

Re: A reason to prefer CTC over BC

I don't know what the situation is like in the New Forest, so I have no idea to what extent the residents are being intolerant or they are indeed being swamped with organised events, but one thing is sure we need to be good neighbours if we expect others to accept cycling. Perhaps Sensible regulati...

Re: Lance is trying to get the ban lifted

Are we in danger of nominating Armstrong as the fall guy so that we don't have worry too much about who else is guilty? There are lots of rumours about other riders from the same era. I'm not going to risk a letter from the libel lawyers by repeating the names, but think about some of the riders who...

Re: A reason to prefer CTC over BC

Perhaps BC are right and the legal situation does need to be cleared up. There was the recent story where a call from someone pretending to be a policeman caused a cycle treasure hunt to be cancelled. If there wasn't a level of uncertainty, then I am sure that the organiser wouldn't have been so eas...

Only use silicone grease otherwise you will rot the rubber seal.

Why does this have to be seen as anti cyclist? Shouldn't we just be grateful that the police are taking traffic offences seriously. It sometimes seems that the police only treat it as a priority after someone is killed.

Re: Clipping and running

Riding safely in a group requires discipline and an understanding of the 'rules'. Neither rider is riding in a discipline way in my opinion. Though the guy in front is the worst.
