Re: Eurotunnel or ferries?

be careful of Eurotunnel and bikes - it's a service only once or twice a day and it might not be at the time you want. The ferries go every 20 minutes or so, and you can go to dunkirk if you want. You can rock up and buy a ticket at te port, although you might pay a bit more for that. and you have t...

No. Not allowed. Same as gas canisters of any kind.

Re: Assembly of bikes at airports

It's worth at the very minimum a quick check that the bike hasn't been damaged in transit. If it has you need to report it before leaving the airport and obtain a piece of paper registering it as damaged. If you don't, as someone I was with once did, you'll find it very hard indeed to convince easyJ...

Re: When I flew with my bike this is what happened......

Is it not the case that bike makers use boxes because the bikes can be reduced in size while in transit. There is hardly any protection in a cardboard box; it's insisted upon by the air carriers to protect luggage from oil and grease. What you're doing is protecting the bike frame from superficial d...

Re: Please Report Any Security Check Problems When Boarding Ferries ex UK

Portsmouth security is a real pain. On the half dozen times I've been through there in a bike I've been searched and so have many of my companions - I'm in a big club and we have a couple of dozen on our tours. I'm convinced they search cyclists because we're a "vehicle" so count as a thor...

Re: Could someone inspire me about northern spain please!!

Prepare to have your life changed. Spain has perfect tarmac, friendly people (i'm sure it's something to do with being run by Muslims for hundreds of years and on the entrance to Europe from Morocco) and it's cheaper than northern Europe by far. Not many campsites - it's too hot in summer and there'...

Re: IBIS and F1 Hotels in France - Any Advice?

you can't beat camping for flexibility and cheapness. and tbh it's usually quieter than a F1. I like Ibis hotels, they're excellent - clean, quiet, cool with aircon, reasonable restaurant and good staff - but i couldn't afford them very often. a lightweight tent, bag and mat won't weigh much, say 3k...

Re: Loire valley - suggestions.

Good idea, it's a lovely area for riding. You might want to think of pitching near the middle, near a railway station, which means you can go down/up the river and use the train to return to your site in the evening.

That's the airline not the airport.

My point was, you CAN get one at Schipol.

Only if you fly with that specific airline.

Re: When I flew with my bike this is what happened......

You can't do it. No airport that I know of sells cardboard boxes for bikes. KLM sells them at Amsterdam Schipol. That's the airline not the airport. When I flew back from Madrid with Iberia from the Iberia terminal they insisted the bike went in a box that cost €20 and was the size for a disassembl...

Re: Jetboil or Trangia

Thanks for replies. I dumped the meths and bought some from a DIY place. This has methanol in the ingredients, the other didn't have this. It burns hotter, and lights instantly. The lesson is that the other stuff seemed to be weaker somehow, maybe for cleaning stuff. The Trangia, an ex swedish army ...

Re: Jetboil or Trangia

A question. In Spain. Bought alcohol de quemar which the internet tells me is meths, and the lady in the shop asked me if it was for burning. Several forums say they've used poor quality meths in all parts of the world and the Trangia works fine. Using an old swedish army Trangia thingy, had it for ...

Re: When I flew with my bike this is what happened......

You can't do it. No airport that I know of sells cardboard boxes for bikes. They can either: Go to a bike shop and obtain a cardboard box there, this may need a phone call first. Once obtained, the box can be collapsed and rolled up then carried while riding the bike, with difficulty, using some rop...

Re: When I flew with my bike this is what happened......

Gatwick to Seville. Bike with front fork removed with wheel inside, and cable tied to the side of the frame. In a box for a child's bike, which I discover is much easier to handle. Slept most of the way, very smooth flight. Bike delivered no problems, reassembled after thirty minutes. Now that Gatwi...
