Wasn't there an old Viking chief that claimed Kintyre was an island, and so his, by having his men drag his longboat over the Tarbert pinch to complete the circumnavigation ? The Council's probably not updated their maps since then.

Re: Has anyone on here used the A9 cycle path?

Only once but would use it again.

Stopped for a break near the Summit. Went a wee bit off the path and saw a gurt big adder slither away under a rock. The hairs stood up on me !

Re: how did you get into touring?

I've always been into hillwalking and camping, cycle-touring is just an extension of ti really.

Re: Powergrips anyone?

I've done ten tours with them, wearing my beloved walking boots. I like going places that are steep and rough, and these let me hop on and off and spin.

I think you'd be best to have a smooth top to your footwear for safety, else they might not release.

Re: Scotland, must do routes.

Take the train to Lairg in the north and do any of the many loops from there. Decent hostels in Helmsdale and Tongue, but take earplugs, there's ALWAYS a snorer.

Re: Can anyone recommend a good sleeping bag?

Much prefer the roll of foam. A good one will be 10 to 12mm thick and same weight or lighter than a blow up mattress, around 300g. And it's actually warmer. I've tried the thermarests, don't like.

Ahem, not everyone rides a Rohloff.

Which I find both sad and hilarious.

Day 14:

That was an adder !

Britain's only poisonous snake. Not lethal to adults but very, very nasty all the same.

My RavenTour is shod with 2" Marathon Supremes. They give a good supple ride, very good if you let a few pounds out for really rough tracks, and they feel very secure in the wet. And they feel reasonably fast, tho I'm sure there's faster. No punctures so far, touch wood. And they are reflective...
