Re: Which new canti's for a Raleigh Randonneur.

the spacing front and rear is different which means you should either use a set of cantis with post-mount brake blocks or use BR-CX50/70 and expect to use a different spacer front and rear. [Brakes with 'V' type blocks will cope with about 5-6mm variation in boss spacing, e.g. from 78mm (centre to ...

Re: Which new canti's for a Raleigh Randonneur.

I've just bought some Tektro CR710s to fit to my 1992 Raleigh Royal, which I think has the same fork as similarly aged Randonneurs. The CR710s will not fit on the front as they overlap the forks and the space between the forks and rims is not wide enough, at least not for the blocks and holders thos...

Re: Disc brakes, hydraulic versus cable

I'll counter the above. :D a. Lack of brakes will never stop you getting home. 1 will almost always do and in the very few circumstances where it won't, you can walk down. In the UK it can't ever be far. b. Hydro brakes almost never break. Never so much had even a trivial failure . Pad wear doesn't...

Re: Disc brakes, hydraulic versus cable

Depends on where you're cycling. I sometimes mountain bike alone in remote areas of Scotland where there is no option of getting recovered by a vehicle in case of breakdown and where lack of working brakes could be very dangerous indeed. Having experienced a hydraulic disc brake failure in such a lo...

Re: Walking boots - warranty claim query

As I posted previously, in my experience, Keen is a decent company to deal with so my vote is that you'll get either a refund or a replacement pair sent by return. I also agree with Keen, whether you own one pair or 100, customers should be treated equally.

Re: Walking boots - warranty claim query

I've always found Keen to be a good company to deal with. I have previously had a relatively new pair of supposedly waterproof Keen shoes leak. They were returned to Keen, by the retailer in that case, and tested and I eventually got a refund. Why not do the test they suggest as it might avoid you h...

Re: "Hit and run" or attempted murder?

I'm afraid this is a sign of the times. I witnessed a teenager being attacked in the public park here last year. The attackers had her on the ground and gave her a severe kicking before I and my fitness instructor could intervene. She was only 16 and was attacked by a group of English youths simply...

Re: Recommended Cantilever Brakes

With apologies for piggy-backing on this thread. I need to replace the cantilever brakes on my 1990s Raleigh Royal as the pivots on the original Shimanos are shot. The levers are Weinmann drop bar. I was thinking Suntour SEs on the rear, which SJS are still selling for £4.99. For the front, which is...

Re: Lightweight footwear.

What's wrong with wearing your SPD shoes to the pub - I often do. On a three month tour I have just SPD shoes and very lightweight open sandals or flip flops, I certainly wouldn't cart trainers around. The reason I wanted a lightweight 2nd pair was that I was doing an off-road mountain bike tour wi...

Re: Lightweight footwear.

Not the cheapest option, but when I did a similar trip last year I got a pair of shoes from here: https://www.vivobarefoot.com/uk. It also depends on whether you get on with barefoot shoes. How have you found them, particularly sizing. They were on my radar as a possible option to replace an a pair...

Re: End of Pensioner "Perks"

I get fed up of this constant bashing of relatively well-off pensioners. There are a number of issues which no-one ever seems to consider or acknowledge. No-one knows the sacrifices people have made over the years so they could have a comfortable retirement and now society wants to penalise those wh...
