As others comment elsewhere, a straight-across-the-crossroads prompted no comment ( from the squawking goon in my back pocket ).
Can I suggest that you try the other cycling navigation options.

Osmand certainly has flaws but compared to Garmin etc. It's fantastic.

Do you use the mapping function? I tend to keep the screen off mostly but turn the screen on for crossroads and roundabouts etc.

Have you tried https://ridewithgps.com? It's a very popular website and gives elevation data along with gradients

Re: GPS Navigation

I use Osmand constantly for both Audaxing and Touring around the country. I haven't had any issues with it being fussy about me being a few metres off the track.
What happens when you're slightly off track?

Rob Roy's grave at Balqhidder.
Have a look at the British Cycle Quest. It's full of interesting churches and graves.

Yes, slower than Virgin but then overall I save time as booking a bike with virgin with a fare at any sort of reasonable price is a terrible fag and involves a longish round trip on a bike to get to a ticket office - and then I have to hope that the ticket office person (not blaming them) can navigate the appalling bike booking system.

Of course, you don't have to book Virgin trains through Virgin.
If you book through Scotrail's website, you'll be able to see if there's an available bike space and book it online.

Though I do have sympathy for your desire to stay clear of Virgin.

This has been covered on other threads about virgin simon.
Virgin's best special offer fares are only available online on their own web page. On which of course you can't book bikes.
I wasn't aware of that.

I've spent several years getting about on mainly Virgin with my bike and always believed that the fares were the same whoever you book through.

Re: Info please: Road surface report for B7076/NCN74 and NCN7 over Dromochter

I recently cycled south over Drumochter. I started out on NCN7 but switched over onto the A9.
I switched over because the state of the NCN7 meant it was slow going. I was touring using a road bike with 28mm tyres.

The NCN7 is rough but other than being slow, still OK with a road bike.

climo wrote:Sweep, Can you post exactly how you find & load additional POI's into Osmand.
It would be great to load Archies database together with the links you get in Archies though that's a tall order.

I've added Archies to OSMand using http://www.zen21456.zen.co.uk/osmand/Import%20Wildcamping%20POI.pdf
You just need to be careful with Archies as many of the sites don't allow tents.

Campsites aren't booked, the plan is to find campsites as we go. I've uploaded into OSMand the location of all the campsites from Archie's.
The problem with wild camping is the lack of showers after spending all day in the saddle!

Good luck on your trip. I'll be setting off from JOG on Tuesday so will be a couple of days ahead of you. We plan to take 14 days so maybe we'll see each other somewhere near Land End.

Re: Trains..

Don't bother with the split ticketing websites. You can always find cheaper fares if you do it yourself. I've just tried that link to go from Birmingham to Thurso on the 18th. I can get it for £100 that website says the cheapest is £197!

Re: Trains..

In general the further you book in advance, the greater the chance of getting cheaper tickets. Try splitting your journey so that you travel between main stations and have a separate ticket to get to that station is required.
I'm doing JOGLE in a couple of weeks. The ticket from Birmingham to Thurso cost £24 by splitting and buying early.
