Re: Advice on a bike

My son has a Carrera Subway 1 which is sold in Halfords they are light and cost about £275 I think, it's been a great bike and sounds like it might meet your needs, though it is a hybrid upright type rather than a racer. Personally I would avoid a bike with suspension unless you are going off road a...

Re: bike shed for storage

I am lucky and have a garage that is the bike shed. One thing to bear in mind though ... my garage has a really high ceiling (1930s house) and it means I have been able to put in a home-made mezzanine-type floor whihc is where I keep spares and other stuff .... if you do build your own, consider goi...

Re: Cameron

Fair play to him for being a positive role model .... it is easy to knock people like "Two Jags Prescott" & even though it may be a bit of showmanship (equally might not) it is good to see someone in his position on a bike. I know a few people with "senior" jobs who wouldn't ...

Re: Handlebar Clamp Bolt Old Bike

Thanks to all for help and advice. I think it was the lack of a shim that caused the issue, with the use of an adjustable I have managed to refit with a shim from a tin of tango and (touch wood) seems fine!

Re: Gripshift returns...

Strange isn't it, I actually like gripshifts ... I like the way you can give them a little extra tweak to get onto a ring if it doens't want to go that I find modern shifters are less able to do. Maybe says more about the way I maintain my bikes than anything else? I have actually rebuilt my Cluad B...

Re: Pub bike advice!

My pub bike is genuinely old and tatty, built on a 1980s Falcon frame of whose origin I have no idea ..... but rides really well, a real pleasure. never had a problem from thieves. I think th rick is to use a tatty frame with a bad pintjob (maybe paint over the original if necessary, badly), good qu...

Re: What Size Spoke Key?

Thanks for all the helpful advice My problem is that becuase most of my riding is in a city and I tend to be up and down pavements / paths and come across quite a few pot holes I end up with lots of litte buckles that rub on the brakes and annoy me. I am not tehnically "gifted" so I don't ...

Handlebar Clamp Bolt Old Bike

I have an old maybe 1960s "The Evans" racer, 4 speed deraillaur if that helps to age it ..... anyway I can't get on with drops any more so I am converting it to straight bars. I have a problem with tightenting the bolt that holds the bars in the stem ... I have fudged it with a 12 mm spann...

What Size Spoke Key?

I am finding that my old 1980s spoke key doesn't fit modern spokes. I bought a multi-spoke key form Halfords but can't get on with it at all so want to buy a "proper one" that has only one aperture. I am told that the Spokey is the best to get, but what size do I need? I believe that there...

Re: New cyclist looking for some advice

Personally would be nervous about Sportdirect bike, but have no evidence to support this. Halfords "Carrera" brand bikes are good bikes for the money I spent £200 on a Carrera Subway 1 a couple of years ago and it is a brilliant bike. It sounds like you're looking at longish distances so w...
