Re: Another cyclist we could do without

Can't believe some people are defending this idiot. Not quite as bad as the morons on another cycling forum who are pretty much saying she asked for it, but getting close.

Depressing.

Just read an interesting description of the streets here in Germany.

In the middle ages people just threw their muck onto the street.

Now the streets are blocked just the same, but by cars that get more ugly each year.

Mind, I much prefer a standing vehicle to a moving one.

Oh dear. Another one.

Re: 10sp Single

The 1x11 SRAM stuff interests me, particularly when paired with hydraulic brakes.

I thought my days of drop handlebars were over due to pain when braking (arthritis in hands) and a bit when changing gear on a Shimano 105 set up, but with hydraulic brakes requiring less effort to operate and one double tap shifter...

Interesting. Very interesting.

Hang on, hasn't this situation arisen because the club has chosen to do just that? No-one wants to impose a helmet-free club. No-one. People would like to be able to make their own decision without having helmets imposed upon them because some other people think they are a good idea.

The point is that no one is under any compulsion to join this or any other club. You are free to ride alone, with friends, or with any club that does not insist on a helmet being worn.

However, if you join this particular club - or any other one that has a helmet only policy - then you accept their rules. If you don't agree with them then you can always canvass members to get the rules changed. However, until you've done so then you abide by the current rules if you want to be in the club.

Tonyf33 wrote:"Massively entitled", that's utterly ridiculous, entitled to what, riding a bike, yes I am entitled to do that, aren't you?
I ride safely with due consideration to myself and as importantly everyone else around me no matter what mode of travel they choose so what garb I am wearing doesn't impact that process one iota but please expand what impact my 'entitlement' to ride a bike has on a) the safety of others and b) a group being negatively effected from an enjoyment POV?

You don't have a clue what you're talking about!

Well since what you're doing is throwing your toys out of the pram and then slagging off the people whose club it is and the rules they have chosen as a club, yes - it does come across as massively entitled.

If you want a helmet free club then start one or join one. Don't impose your rules and beliefs on people who don't share them.

IMHO to close the bridge to pedestrian and cyclist traffic appears to be something of an overreaction.

cheers

Normally, yes. However they're using the pedestrian and cycle path for machinery access, so that's why it's closed.

Doesn't this show something about the attitude to free choice of the two sides of the helmet debate?

BOOM, we have a winner.
That you're forced away from certain clubs in your area because you just want to ride a bike and not have to worry about rules that are utterly futile/superfluous to riding safely pretty much shows you how blinded people are and how one sided the 'arguement' is. :x
Imagine the outcry of being told you're only allowed to join a cycling club if you don't wear a helmet when on rides due to health and safety, it'd sound utterly preposterous yet that's effectively what is being thrown at people up and down dale including most cycling events.
I imagine all these types insisting on such wear crash helmets/safety aids for other riskier activities in life

My pet theory is that it weeds out the massively entitled people who get annoyed at having to wear a helmet, thus making the rides much more enjoyable for everyone else.

Re: Bladder Neck Incision

My condition was complicated by the prostatitis, so it was about 9 months before I got back on a bike. Most people are fine within six to twelve weeks.

He's about two seconds after the light goes red. If there was a traffic camera there he'd have three points and a sixty quid fine to look forward to, so hopefully someone will forward this to the police.

Thanks again, all. EBC is just up the road from my work, so I'll have a look in tomorrow or Wednesday and see what the have for the S works Turbos. I'll see if I can get a measurement of the 26mm ones.

Recommendations for summer tyres in 700c x 28mm size.

Yes, I know it's winter, but with Black Friday upon us it doesn't hurt to look around for good deals.

My Boardman Team Hybrid currently has 32mm M+on it, which are fine for winter commuting, however I'll be looking to replace these come next summer. As the bike uses Mavic XM319 rims, which I have no intention of replacing, the thinnest I can safely go is 28mm. I've tried Kenda, Conti and Vittoria tyres of thinner widths on other bikes in the past (drops, before the arthritis in my fingers made riding those difficult), however tyre tech has moved on since those days, and I'm wondering what fellow riders would recommend for a decent, reasonably quick yet robust and puncture proof set of summer tyres. From a quick search Conti GP4000s II gets good praise, for example.

Re: Commuting - is a rucksack always going to be sweaty?!

I use a rucksack with one of my bikes to commute. As the journey is about 80 minutes, it's not a problem, although I do get a sweaty back. Anything longer than that and I use the other bike, which has panniers fitted.

Re: Bladder Neck Incision

Sorry, but that's unlikely.

Here's a leaflet giving some details - your doctor or consultant should really talk you through all this.
