With CJ, you could email in a query and you would get a reply almost immediately. Now you get replies once every 2 months in the magazine to a few selected questions. Gone from a great service to a crap one. :(

Re: What milage do you get with a Bosch Drive?

I'm, 100kg and live in Essex. I regularly do 50 mile rides on Eco with a bit of Tour. 500 battery. I find that I lose one 'bar' at about 25 miles and another at 45. The readout often says that I have up to 50 miles left.

Re: Hub Brake Propaganda

I used them for years as a postie. Always worked fine, often carrying heavy loads. Bike was left outdoors 24/7. Zero maintenance - just a quick twiddle with the adjuster. :D

They may not be a problem in Northumberland, but in South Essex.

Illegal occupation of council/private land.
Criminal damage to gain such access.
Flytipping on an industrial scale.
Intimidation and violence towards locals/police.
Fleecing vulnerable people with shoddy gardening/tarmacking etc.
Illegal horse racing on major roads.
Untaxed/uninsured vehicles.
Non-payment of council tax.
Non attendance at school.
Exceding plot quotas on legal sites.
Theft.
Etc.
Etc.
Many of them have houses in Ireland to return to in the winter, but find the 'pickings' here to be profitable - and the police/council can't/won't face up to them.

Re: E Bike - speeding?

The reason why you can't be 'pulled' for speeding on any pedal bike is that there is no legal requirement to have an accurate speedometer on the machine. :D

I have enjoyed years of good service from them. Posted a hub off for wheel-building; prompt email reply and courteous phone call. :D It will come back well packed and built.

Re: Maximum speed on a Road Bike

I've often topped 50 mph on a loaded touring bike in the French Alps or Pyrennes, and over 60 mph on a road bike. Nowadays - being a bit older - I might just take it a bit easier though.

Re: Crackdown: licences immediately revoked if a driver fails a roadside sight test

I'm always amazed by the fact that you can pass a simple test in your teens and get a licence (yes - that IS how you spell it!) for life - no retest, no regular medical, just sign yourself off at 70 (I'm there soon!).
I'm regularly reassessed for my licence for firearms, and it should be the same for another potentially lethal machine.

He's finally ordered one so I've told him he's riding up front in future unless there's a following wind.

I also agree with the Bosch calculator. As an example, with a Riese & Muller sport bike; road tyres; 100 kg rider; eco/tour settings; rolling route etc. with a 500w/h battery, I've just done 55 miles at an average of 12.5 mph. Still got 3 bars (out of 5) on the indicator and a possible 40 more mile left from the dashboard predictions. :D

Re: Alfine 8 speed hub leaking?

My Alfine should always be grease-packed. Some people have been using car automatic transmision fluid, and this leaks out onto the disc and kills the braking/pads. :(

Chainring and sprocket? Much better to carry spare cables ready cut to length, and the tools to change them.

hemo wrote:My generic China 42v 2a Sans chargers weigh between 400 & 500 grams and I do have one that is about 225 grams due to the plastic casing having a lot of flute cut outs.
It will depend on the bike/manufacturer brand as to whether a different charger can be used.
What is the charger brand & the buike you have ?

It's an ST Kunshan STC8108LC and it's a Sparticle 250w front hub motor conversion on a 26" wheel touring bike. Actually, without the mains lead it weighs about 480 gm.

Smaller charger?

My charger is huge and heavy - 700gm and bulky. Does anyone do smaller/lighter ones to carry on tour. 42v, 5mm coaxial. Mine is 3A, but wouldn't mind a slower charge overnight etc. :?:

Re: Distance on battery

Having just gotten into electric bikes, after 50+ years of riding, I can observe as follows:-
My 5.6 Ah battery is good for 20 - 25 miles, my 9 Ah is good for 35-40 miles. This is for a 100kg rider using a low level of assist on flat to moderately hilly tarmac. :)
Hope this helps.
