Nearly came unstuck recently booking through a 'split fare' website - didn't realise the train was Lumo so no bike!
Seems crazy that they are allowed to operate (and claim to be greener!) with no bike spaces at all!
Have now paid more and booked on LNER - hoping the hooks are vaguely usable!

I wear sealskinz - waterproof, but that makes them windproof too.

Re: Interfering stranger lecturing my son about bike clothing
Interesting article here about the Dutch and their attitude to cycling
https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/ ... astructure
Hopping on a bike to ride to shops/school/work no more makes you a cyclist than walking to the station makes you a rambler - so you don't need special clothes/helmets/safety equipment.
I suspect that was the point the man was trying to make, although it was untactful and interfering, and I think in doing 33 miles your son is more than entitled to call himself a cyclist!
But I do like the Dutch attitude - if cycling were just another way of getting about, without requiring changing into sports clothes, that would be a really positive step.

Re: Can anyone help fix Bikehike.co.uk? Is there an alternative?
The 'donate' button on the website gives an email address of admin@bikehike.co.uk - so might be worth dropping a line.
The error message is "You have exceeded your request quota for this API. See https://developers.google.com/maps/docu ... ing-errors"
I know google have recently changed their API pricing, so probably related to that.

As a woman I choose to ride a "man's bike".
There's no reason why a man can't choose to ride a lady's bike.

I'd be interested to know what they say. I have experienced a few glitches with the mailing lists myself in the past. If you can log into your member account on the Cycling UK website you might want to do so, look at the Mailing Options page and see whether anything's ticked there. And of course check your spam folder. Look for emails from Dan Howard, rather than from Cycling UK.
It was mentioned in the introductory paragraph of one Cycleclips and got its own section in another, but no it wasn't in the subject lines.
Well that's bizarre!
I have 'unsub cycleclips' (which I get!)
'unsub offers and events', 'unsub membership/fundr' and 'unsub campaigns' - all showing as unsubscribed since 11/8/16.
Perhaps the election emails come under 'membership/fundr', although I received them last year, so had assumed I would this year.
I'll untick everything and look out for them next year!

I'd check the Cromatry/Nigg ferry was running before cycling to Cromatry!
Double check any ferries you're relying on - we had to rely on the goodwill of some local fishermen to get us across.
(We're not as stupid as we sound - the website had the timetable, and no indication that it wasn't running for a few weeks)

Re: What tours have you done? What do you want to do?
Only a fraction of what you've all done
Cycles of more than a couple of days include
- Reading to Bude
- LeJoG via Arran and Mull
- London to Paris via Avenue Verte
- Cycle tour of Cuba (organised and supported)
On my todo list is the St Malo to Nice - hoping to do it in the next few years.

Just found the page that says that applications closed end of July.
I didn't get any emails about the elections - did others?

Re: Death by Dangerous Cycling
atlas_shrugged wrote:If we are going to get vindictive about things (and I believe this proposal is a purely vindictive law given the low death rate) then why not:
Death by dangerous Planning:
This would be where a planner wilfully refuses to make changes after warnings given over a dangerous junction/road/path/state of repair. This could even be made an aggravated offence in the case of vulnerable road users.
Accident responsibility shifted onto employers (as it is in Belgium):
Most UK employers care not a jot if employees have a dangerous journey into work. In Belgium the employers insurance is responsible in the case of accidents when travelling to work. Since employers (and schools) are responsible for the rush hour why are they not made responsible for accidents?
Dangerous walking:
A pedestrian looking at a mobile phone who steps out into the road without looking is clearly responsible
Causing death by dangerous behaviour? Cycling should no more be singled out than any other reckless behaviour.

If you 'sponsor' anyone for any organised charity event, you are making a donation to the charity. They are fundraising for the charity but all the Ts&Cs make it clear that your money is a donation and will not be refunded if they fail to start/complete the event.

I have a CX type bike which is perfect for commuting. You need to ensure that the frame is strong enough for panniers, and you have the lugs for mudguards.
It's worth finding out if your new employer offers a cycle to work scheme - get your nice new bike tax free!
