Re: Fill that hole

Any idea what was wrong with the old app? Worked fine for years. Great for the cycle commute and cycle touring. In the old system you could view to see if the potholes you reported after damaging your bike or self had been previously reported thus your situation was reasonably foreseeable. 😕

Fill that hole

:|
Used the Fill That Hole online reporting for the first time today. Not a patch on the old app. Many more steps to complete. Not sure if I’ll be reporting many more. I used to report a pot hole most days.

Cycle insurance.

Following a discussion with a fellow cyclist I decided to insure my bike/s independently of my house insurance. A quick check on the CTC member's page lead me to Yellow Jumper but not that simple. I have a beloved Dawes Audax that has become a bit of a Trigger's broom. Suffice to say it has had a high end frame refurb and respray, tours with tubus rack and Carradice panniers but commutes and does everything else with quick release saddlebag. Garmin provide the stats and navigation, Brooks all day comfort. The wheel set is high end the transmission less so; Ultrega 50-34, 11-32 cassette.

I contacted them by the help line as if you bought the bike new you tick the drop down for new; the drop downs get worse... I was told to list all the upgrades and make sure that I had all the receipts. Incredibly I have the original and in this digital world I have recent adaptions. This however would not provide any sensible valuation. It would make more sense for the details of he current bike to be noted, photographed and valued by a reputable cycle shop. Anyone know of a sensible cycle insurance company?

Re: Hotels and bikes

All answers are reflective of my experience. Europe excellent and a normal way for residents to arrive.
UK sometimes have to take luggage to the room then carry your „sports equipment „ to your room.
Seems to be acceptable. I did that some 10 years ago at a hotel near my parents and it has become the Norm. Last time I was there the new management asked what cyclists would want. She was considering cleaning up a storage room which is not used. That was pre Covid and west London. I am very hopeful. Unprompted she asked if she would need to fit rails to lock too.

Re: Touring with a fold up- hard case trailer?

Thank you.
Bristol is my local so good to hear positive approach from the flyer.
I have taken it on National in a soft bag from Bristol and was told by the driver- no bikes but the safest place for it would be that end of the hold opening the appropriate door and turning his back. I thanked him and he smiled. In Norwich he unloaded and said no problem but in Bristol there’s CCTV so he has to be careful in being sensible. Best to load up your sports bag I guess.

Touring with a fold up- hard case trailer?

I have a dahon Vitesse hub gear bike which is serving me well. My wife has bought a Bickerton Junction which is incredibly similar but has the edge due to dynamo lighting.
We are now looking for hard cases for them but can’t find any for 20” wheels. Ideally they would convert to trailers with soft bag liners. I am sure I have seen them in the past. This would allow them to be safely stowed in coach holds. Once arrived in an area the soft bag can then go into the trailer.

Re: Flying with KLM - What Bike cost / experience ?

We regularly fly KLM/Air France never taken my bike but anecdotally I am sure that i have read that the way to fly bike is to state that it is sporting equipment?? Skis, golf clubs go free as do bikes? I have no evidence and no experience but suggest it worth an email/telephone call.

Re: Touring without cooking equipment?

I always take a mini Triangia to brew Oolong tea. It is always restorative and improves pre cooked or raw foods. Esbit solid fuel stove was my old kit but I found Hex blocks no longer seemed to be hot enough.
The need to cook is purely personal.

Re: Grand Union Canal

Thank you for all your replies. I recognise those pitfalls and goes that it would not be the best idea. I also have ridden kennet and avon from bristol switching to the A4 at one point. I missed the ncn4 sign. Sheerness to Worcester was nice a few years ago which I rode apart of my ride to Sustrans Festivol at that time which planted a canal seed for cycling.
Thanks again, will make a considered approach with an eye on bicycle quest.

Grand Union Canal

:D I have a random week leave beginning of September. Fascinated by canals as they are flat run from town to town so pubs and accommodation along the way.
Anyone ridden the full length? Coming back to touring and thinking of riding a Saturday to Thursday to Uxbridge.
Any knowledge or experience of that stretch, surface etc? Good accommodation?
