Re: A Holland-touring newbie seeks wisdom...

i hadn't thought about Newcastle so i am now thinking we could cheat a bit and get dropped off in Newcastle, or somewhere close, get the ferry and start in Amsterdam and go south towards either Europoort or Zeebrugge? I would do it the other way round, so you have the prevailing wind behind you. Ar...

Re: After A Tour ... Lacking Motivation to Go Out Cycling

I know that feeling, I was the same after my 2 month tour in 2017, I was ready to go again this summer but don't seem to have accrued sufficient brownie points from the wife yet!

Re: A Holland-touring newbie seeks wisdom...

My brief experience of 5 days through the Netherlands cycling last summer left me with the feeling that a detailed route is not necessary, you can 'wing it' with a vague plan of where you want to visit, there is an abundance of well signposted cycle paths and the Dutch are so friendly and accommodat...

I had my kett noted on the house insurance at a value of £5K with no additional premium. One of the advantages of having an old fashioned insurance broker.

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

last summeren route to Italy I rode my trike with hydraulic discs on the two rear wheels, alongside me was a hybrid with calipers. after 900km (in Lugano) we had to stop at a bike shop for new blocks on the hybrid. no such problems with the discs. overall I have done about 4000km including some very...

not a lot of fun on a recumbent trike. I just keep well behind buses (and well away from them in general!)

Bovine Blockages!

Not for the first time, Today I found myself on a cycle path across a common, blocked by a herd of grazing cows. When it has happened before I have been able to swerve onto grass and go around. but this time there was no way around. I find it hard to stand, let alone walk and it is a bit intimidatin...

Re: What tours have you done? What do you want to do?

Don't understand the stuff about CTC It never occurred to me, sorry. My tours are well spread out, from memory: 1975 with my dad, Fort William-Mallaig, circuit of Skye and back East to Inverness aged 9 on a 3-speed Puch Pathfinder & a ruckack 1982 post o-level jaunt with school friends. York to ...

Re: Discovering England (/Wales)

From Belgium I would take the Zeebrugge-Hull ferry, from there it is only 80km to York, from there you can take a route through the scenic Yorkshire Dales over to the Lake District then you will see the best parts of Northern England and be able to sample lots of great local beer en-route. (it won't...

Congratulations....... welcome to the Dark side All you need now is a beard and sandals! OT.... Cumbria based makes more sense of your user name. Re: The Guardian does Touring by bike in France:The Véloscénic

Thanks for posting, it may be my answer to turning the avenue verte into a round-trip. no train will take my 'bent trike so i could cycle to Paris and return this way, rather than retracing my steps, and back to the UK from St Malo or Caen, job sorted! :)

Re: Distance on battery

The honest answer to your question is, nobody really knows - all systems are different and performance depends on a whole lot of variables, type of bike, gearing, size of wheels, rider weight, speed, acceleration, terrain, weather, etc etc..... I have found that only trial and error can tell you how...
