Thanks Keith. This will be a great asset to me this summer, assuming we are ever free to tour again

This would be an excellent app if anyone can get details?
Surprised no one has mentioned Warmshowers. I've camped and stayed at many all over the world. I'm also prepared to host, but it seems not many bicycle tourists have Dewsbury on their bucket list

It's an amazing source of information and inspiration. I learned a lot from it before my first bicycle tour, and have 4 blogs on there

Wow, this all sounds so complicated
Ideally it would be good to sit with someone, watch and learn. In view of lock down not sure when that's likely

Re: Gopro / ipad advise
Thanks everyone for the help. Yes it's a Gopro Hero 8 Black. To amend my earlier list, I think I need to:
Get an ipad.
Transfer videos from the Gopro, onto the ipad using a the Gopro's SD card and a card reader
Look at purchasing Luma Fusion or similar, for editing videos on the ipad, when I have power at overnight accommodation.
I'll use power banks and numerpur SD cards to allow me to keep filming during the (probable maximum) 3 or 4 days when I don't have electricity. I'll have no reason to want to use the ipad unless in a hotel, so the powerbanks are only for the Gopro.
Obviously until borders are open again etc I'm unsure when I can begin my Cairo to Cape Town trip. This will however give me chance to practice my video skills in England before I commence. I've previously always written blogs on my bicycle tours through 21 countries. I'm hoping that videos can perhaps better show people that Africa is not the dangerous, dark continent that it is often portrayed as.

Re: Gopro / ipad advise
Ultimately I want to make videos while I'm cycling from Cairo to Cape Town. I'll be travelling quite lightly, and plan to use powerbanks to keep the Gopro and devices charged during the days when I don't stay in accommodation with electricity.
I understand the sim cards in the Gopro can fill up quite quickly, so will carry several of them as they are tiny.
Thanks everyone for the input. If I'm understanding the advise correctly I should:
Look at getting an ipad.
Transfer videos from the Gopro sim cards directly onto the ipad.
I then just have to learn/decide which is the best editing software to use on the ipad, and get my head round how to use it

Re: Gopro / ipad advise
Thanks folks.
My phone is a Huawei Mate Lite, running Android.
I tried running the free Gopro app that Simon posted in the initial reply. That app struggles to connect to the actual Gopro. I bought the Gopro brand new.
I met with a mate who has put many bike tour videos on YouTube, and he advised that that app is not at all reliable, and even when working, it is very difficult to do decent editing of videos on a phone. He uses an Apple Mac Notebook, but I was hoping for a smaller device, if available?

Gopro / ipad advise
Just to clarify I am not very knowledgeable on electronic devices, apps, etc so forgive me for being a fool
I've purchased a Gopro 8 Black, which I want to use for extended bicycle tours, ie several months long, and want to make videos whilst on tour. I can't get the Gopro app to work on my phone, and am thinking an ipad may work better? A laptop would probably be too big to be practical, as I'm planning on a light weight bikepacking set up, as opposed to panniers.
Can anyone advise the type of device I need, and recommend an editing app that is user friendly?

Re: European Holiday 2021 suggestions ( flattish terrain )
Thanks for the feedback everyone. Sorry I should have clarified I'm looking at next year, post Covid.
I like the idea of heading off almost spontaneously, and also when heading back, not being tied to a definite departure date and time. Great to hear tickets bought close to departure are not overly priced.

Could those who've bicycle toured using ferries from England to Europe (particularly Hull) please advise approximate prices? Also is prebooking essential?

Re: UK to Cape Town is it viable?
Hello Sanfairyanne. I was planning on riding Cairo to Cape Town, starting in the 1st September 2020. Obviously that plan has been put on hold tentatively for a year, but who knows?
I'm in a WhatsApp group of people who are currently doing, or have done this trip. Prior to Covid, there was a well beaten path, going down the East of Africa. Look on Facebook for "Cairo to Cape Town" for details.
I've also got a page on Facebook called "Team Pie Tours" which I'll update as (hopefully) my plans and eventual journey progresses.
By the way, in 2018/19 I spent 15months cycling from Rio de Janeiro to Vancouver, and personally enjoyed the Latin Americas more than the USA or Canada. I can't recommend that region enough - my favourite part of the world, particularly on a bicycle tour. Should you want to consider that part of the world my blog is: www.teampieusa.wordpress.com
Good luck, and please keep us updated on your decision

Re: Best Garmin type computer for bicycle tourist?
Thanks everyone for the help.
I'd like a dedicated device as opposed to an app/smartphone.
After reading the review link JDSK posted, I'd be interested if anyone has experience using the Garmin Edge Explore?

Best Garmin type computer for bicycle tourist?
I'm sure this topic may have been covered before, but these type of products and suppliers seem to update and change so rapidly. Can anyone advise which device would best suit my requirements?
I'm not worried about how many Watts I'm turning, or knowing my heart rate or vo2max. I'd like to have a device where I can upload, say the Way Of The Roses route, and follow it. Also request "bicycle friendly route to..." without diverting through ploughed fields etc, like maps.me takes you on.
When the world eventually gets back to normal, I also intend cycling from Cairo to Cape Town, so the ability to download internationall maps is also required.
Thanks in advance

Re: Cairo to Cape Town, record for +50year old?
Thanks so much everyone. As suggested I'll contact the TDA etc. I'm sure I can learn from them.
I've previously travelled extensively in Africa, and have also done a 15month unsupported, solo bicycle tour through North, Central and South America. The C-CT I'm planning is very much a personal challenge, as opposed to a sight seeing trip.
I'll keep you updated on here as to how things progress

Thanks Mattheus. I'll try contacting the people you mentioned. I think it's safe to say Mark Beaumont's record will be safe!
