A nice long article debunking the myth that most of those who have died with Covid-19 would have died of something else this year anyway.

Re: Is the UK government an incompentent bunch of liars?

Isn't this thread meant to be about whether the govt are an incompetent bunch of liars? Not about their poll ratings? I don't see anyone disputing the incompetence and the lies. The latest one is the fake claim to have carried out 100,000 tests on Thursday. "Achieved" by including in the f...

Re: Suggestions & tips for biking in UK

Hi and welcome! What sort of thing do you have in mind?
- a region where you can base yourselves for a week and do several day rides?
- or would you aim to travel to a new place each day, maybe carrying camping gear?

And on-road (quiet roads), or off-road?

Re: Superb interview by Chris Boardman on BBC Breakfast

Criticism has been for those like Michael Gove who stupidly suggested a 1 hour limit, despite that not being the law or even the official guidance. Fortunately that has been knocked back since.

Good to see none of that nonsense in this discussion.

One way or another, a sudden spike in deaths. What's your explanation if not COVID?

Re: Covid 19 outbreak - arguing about Stats (again)

If you want more stats, the institute of Actuaries has published a report comparing the overall deaths this year compared to previous years. https://www.actuaries.org.uk/system/files/field/document/Mortality%20monitor%20Week%2014%202020%20v01%202020-04-14.pdf Key points: - up to mid-March, deaths we...

Re: Coronavirus cafes

The police have issued new guidance confirming that it's ok to take for a brief refreshment/rest stop during your exercise. So no need to hide while you eat your sandwich and have a drink - but obviously a full picnic would be stretching it. Implicit in this is that it's ok to exercise for more tha...

Re: Civil Discourse on the Implications of Brexit

The Guardian also reports that the EU are accepting that the restrictions due to Covid19 make it simply be impossible to negotiate a UK trade deal in time for December. Which would be a statement of the bleedin obvious. Not that Johnson would be so honest with us of course.

Re: Will you still cycle

On BBC News just now, Michael Gove was asked how far you can go on your one form of daily exercise. He said - just your usual distance. Whatever that means... but of course you simply have to be sensible.

He also said that golf isn't exercise. +1

Re: Ventilators: the perfect the enemy of the good?

In December 2016 the UK Gov ran a 3 day national pandemic flu exercise codenamed Exercise Cygnus, CMO Sally Davies said “ We’ve just had in the UK a 3-day exercise on flu, on a pandemic that killed a lot of people..It became clear that we could not cope with the excess bodies”. ... Re: Boris Johnson: Why is a proven liar in power?

The other reason most UK people didn't ever lobby their MEPs is that the UK was an independent sovereign nation. So Westminster decisions were more important and and your local MP was a more effective person to complain to. Coming back to the topic, does anyone else find it disturbing that a proven ...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

For the last 3.5 years the Tories have successfully avoided discussing what sort of Brexit we will end up with. So in the end we will leave and still have no clue as to what the final deal will look like (not the "certainty on Brexit" that my new MP promised). Attempts by the opposition to...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

I think you are correct. We've done the Political Compass test a few times on here, and just about all of the contributors were left/liberals, including me. I still want us out of the EU, but more than that, I want rid of the all the Tories. If that means we remain, so be it. Now there is some sens...
