Re: Hook of Holland to Amsterdam with 9yr old twins

Thanks I will keep a look out for mine then, hopefully they will arrive this week. I don't need them until the end of April but I want to start planning distances and accommodation rather than winging it each day.

Hope you have a good trip.

MrsHJ have your LF maps arrived? I ordered mine in the 4th and they still haven't arrived.

Re: Cycling out of Hook of Holland ferry terminal

Thank you all so much for the help, pointers and advice. The trip is now definitely on and I will be spending the whole summer in Germany with friends and using their place as a base. I'm going for so long I'm shipping my horse over as well and will have until the Autumn before I need to come home. ...

Re: Cycling out of Hook of Holland ferry terminal

Thanks Foxyrider, exactly the kind of advice I was looking for. Your suggestion of going across on the Maasluis would mean I could probably take the LF12 eastwards instead. I don't have any time constraints so am quite happy to meander, explore and generally enjoy being back on the bike. Waiting for...

Cycling out of Hook of Holland ferry terminal

Can anyone tell me how easy or difficult it is to get away from the port and on to the LF1? I am thinking of cycling across to Nijmegen and then over the border to friends in Heinsberg in Germany. From the maps it looks easier to go North on the LF1 and then pick up the LF4 and go eastwards but stan...

Re: Touring luxuries

I try to travel light on tour and consider everything I take to be essential from my tent to my bed to my cooker. My only luxury is the journey to my destination and home at the end of the trip. If it's long haul I fly business class and stay in a hotel to get over jet lag. My days of hosteling are ...

Re: Trailers and steep hills - how safe are descents?

I've ridden down mountains off road with my BOB trailer fully loaded and it's never been a problem. It has never tried to overtake me but then I have never gone more than 30mph and it is a single wheeled so just stays behind. Don't go faster than you feel comfortable and stay in control. MickF is th...

I use the Axiom on extended tours and they have never failed me yet. I didn't know they had a weight limit

Back on the bike pre tour

It has been a very long time since I cycled, October 2012 was the last time my white legs were on view to the world, except for nipping to the post box that is, but that doesn't really count. I had swapped leg power for horse power, the equine variety and had been very content breaking my youngster ...

Re: Trailer vs Panniers

There are pros and cons to each but in general I find the trailer produces more drag because of the extra wheel although it flows behind the bike well and I like how the bike responds. On the other hand panniers are easier to get on and off the bike in a hurry leaving you a more versatile machine. T...

Re: Travel Insurance North America

I always use Snowcard for bike touring in the US although I didn't use them when I did the Divide as I didn't know about them. Have a look at their website and work out how many days, what level of activity, how much excess and kit you want to insure and it works it out for you. It won't be cheap bu...

I am a long time member and although I have never stayed with anyone I have hosted quite a few times. I have had nothing but positive experiences with interesting touring cyclists staying and despite the new fee issue I will continue to support the organisation.

Re: How much do you spend on take away food per week?

I had my first takeaway last night in about 18 months. Its not something I normally even consider but my body was craving curry following a bad cough and cold. I just needed to be able to taste something.
