Re: How much worse does it have to get?

The country isn't a business You've grasped it, but many people haven't, especially politicians (or else they are playing thick): there absolutely is a magic money tree for sovereign governments that issue their own fiat currency. These sorts of governments can accomplish what they like so long as ...

Re: Dishing/centring/alignment tools for building wheels – recommendations?

Out of curiosity, apart from it being bad form, is there any down side in safety or handling to a bike with an offset back wheel? I'm sure I've ridden around with a rear wheel that was massively off-centre. It still cleared the frame, and I adjusted the brake shoes appropriately. If I'd had disc bra...

I think you are on to something here. Many sightees report a strong hum, so the source of the fluff could be belly button, or the intra toe variety.

Re: Heating Costs - linear or exponential?

remember radiated heat is proportional to T^4 (Stefan's law) and the sky is always fairly cold, or extremely cold, and your house is in radiative contact with the sky, but not convective contact. To answer the question, we'd need to know the proportion of heat that is conducted and convected away re...

Re: UFO Anybody seen one??

You are assuming they are solid. The external bit, or indeed the entire object, might not be made from material. The fuzziness could also be because they are coated in fluff.

Re: UFO Anybody seen one??

You're a bit out of date: UFOs now seem to be described as Unidentified Aerial Phenomena. Did you see the targeting pod footage from Cdr David Fravor's FA18 that was released a month or two ago? https://youtu.be/4mWYnTlAEAo One of the solutions to the Fermi paradox of why we don't see signs of alien...

Re: Slipping freehub

If you want an example of oil gunging up, I had a bottle of an environmentally friendly wet chain lube with 100% natural ingredient that was sent as a sample with a purchase. It claims to be made from neither petrochemicals, nor palm oil, nor teflon, and indeed, it smells of pine trees. The bottle h...

I've got butterflies

Red Admirals...woken up and vibrating their wings...in the house.
Should I
  • let them out to imminent death
  • feed them for a few weeks in some way (sugar solution?)
  • refreeze them

Re: Seat tube reaming questions

Why risk messing up a frame for a cheap component like a seatpost? Better to shim an undersize post, for example? I very much agree I'm still not clear on what people are advocating to repair this. The seat tube lumen is ovalised, and 0.15 to 0.3mm larger in every 'diameter' than it should be. Are ...

Re: Seat tube reaming questions

Several difficulties have presented themselves. If I were to minimally ream the seat tube, I'd then have to machine 0.7mm off the OD of the next size up seat pin. If I were to start with some thicker schedule pipe instead of a seat pin, I'd have to swage the end or spigot on the head of a proper sea...

Re: Seat tube reaming questions

I appreciate your replies. My seat tube is no longer round internally, and I have a lot of grey dust that falls out. I believe this is from fetting. I have 5mm thick walls, so I thought the better quality solution would be to ream. Shims without adhesive 'packing' aren't going to solve the non-round...

Seat tube reaming questions

I have a thick-walled Al alloy seat tube that I want reamed and I have a few basic questions. How much might a shop charge for this? I want to go a whole mm on ID, which is to the next commonly available seat pin OD. Is there a limit on the taper of the reaming cutter so I'd have to be closer than t...

Wi-Fi home security camera recommendations

A lot of people seem to be getting internet connected home security cameras, but I've noticed that some require a subscription service to store video, or they just record to an onboard SD card, which seems a bit dumb as a thief could just steal the camera or card. I've seen kits that come with four ...
