Thanks to all for your input.

I have ordered a Tange BB from Sprockets.

Cheers

Square Taper BB

Morning All,

I am after some advice regarding the above for my old Evans 531c touring bike. I have in the past purchased UN55 68mm bottom brackets and have been happy with them, but it appears these are now hard to come by particularly in a 110mm spindle length. I see that there is an item called the UN300, but I gather these are not so good.

My question is if the Stronglight offering (at £23) from Spa cycles is a reasonable replacement for the UN55 in terms of longevity/quality?

I have found a number of cheap Neco BBs on eBay but wonder if these would be a serious downgrade after the UN55?

Thanks

James.

Re: Puncture resistant tyres for my road bike

I've just changed from 23mm Gatorskins to 25mm Schwalbe Marathon pluses having been impressed with them in a bigger size on my mtb. The ride feels improved to me, more surefooted which is more important than a slight decrease in speed that I am not sure I can really notice.

Re: Dented frame repair

I read somewhere you can fill the damaged tube with water, plug it solid and put it in the freezer. The expansion pushes the dent out. In theory!

Re: How much for a decent bike?

I tend to agree with what has already been said. I have just bought a couple of Reynolds 531C frames off Ebay, one a pure racing type (Graham Weigh) and the other a (built by F. W. Evans) tourer. The dearest was £85. I purchased a used wheelset for £40 and the other bits and pieces for even less. The Graham Weigh is now on the road and is the nicest bike I have ever ridden. Why spend more than a £200 or £300? Regards James

Fit and geometry are what makes a goldilocks bike. Tailored to your expectations.

Not a racist post, I am just concerned that this is not helpful when the driver should have been demonised for pulling out.

Re: New commuter - Disc Trucker

I had a disc trucker, it made a fine touring bike loaded up. Unfortunately I found the top tube a bit too long for me, being longer in the legs and shorter in the upper body. Also unloaded I found the frame a bit stiff for comfort. But hay it is a touring bike, a nice frame, well built and finished.

This stuff is good for two tonnes / 2500 psi. I think I will give this ago.
Thanks Brucey, common sense prevailed in the end :D

Re: Raleigh Headset 26 tpi 1" steerer _ Help!

I have seen countless hot rods, kit cars with shortened output shafts welded exactly as I have described. These see predominantly torsion but also very significant bending loads. I am only going by what I have seen. Any ideas?

I am assuming your statement is true prior to stress relief through heating?

Re: Raleigh Headset 26 tpi 1" steerer _ Help!

Can you point to your source regarding residual stress always being at yeild in the material? Considering the Mig 25 was predominantly welded together, how come the structure didn't fail upon loading?

oh well, thank Brucey, we shall see. What epoxy have you tested and found to provide the values quoted in your earlier message?
Thanks
