Looks like an accident waiting to happen though. :D

I think the accident already happened:

Edinburgh Council installs nearly 200 new 'bike hangers' across the city:

Re: Lockdown non-touring quiz

It is the Kingswear Princess ferry in Dartmouth: https://www.dartharbour.org/visitors/local-information/ferries/ I got it from the Gnome reference - I went there with my nephews and niece when they were really little, and no, I didn't try on one of the hats and sit on a mushroom. I've run out of pic...

Re: why the 'what three words' TV ad is so annoying?

Thanks. If these people feel it's value for money, all well and good, but I fail to see any monetary value in it at all. Anyone using it could circumvent the payment system. It's a very worthwhile app and easier to use than lat long or OS grid ref. If you want to embed it in your own application, t...

Re: why the 'what three words' TV ad is so annoying?

Ok Will, I can understand that. Therefore, my original question still stands. Why does anyone pay for it? From what I see, no-one needs to, not even the emergency services. You need to pay for it if you are accessing it via the API. You would do it this way if you wanted the functionality embedded ...

Re: why the 'what three words' TV ad is so annoying?

Question. Can you just keep asking for the same one 1,000+ times or does it have to be 1,000+ different ones? If it's the same one, it's easy to get to 1,000+ I wouldn't have thought it would make any difference as it clears the 3 word address when you click on the box. Having said that, the free 1...

Re: why the 'what three words' TV ad is so annoying?

Done 500 so far. Stopped half way across the SE from central London for a slurp of beer. Back soon. :D The free 1000/month "convert to coordinates" requests are using the API to do a lookup of a three word address to retrieve the coordinates. When you click on the map and get the three wo...

Re: why the 'what three words' TV ad is so annoying?

Sorry, still don't get it. The delivery drivers use addresses and postcodes to work out the route. All free, and all done in advance. If they want more accurate info, they ask for it. If they don't, they don't. W3W would work fine .............. and be free as well. W3W is not a replacement for add...

Re: why the 'what three words' TV ad is so annoying?

The open source community would have had to invent the method of using a 3 word address to describe a location in order to be able to use that method in a word dictionary. They didn't, What3Words invented it and patented it Worth noting that the "invented it" claim is disputed: https://pa...

Re: why the 'what three words' TV ad is so annoying?

Show me where I have to pay or have had to pay in all the time I've had the app. Please I'm curious. Show me too. I can use it endlessly. Where (and why) do I pay? I suspect (no more than that) that if you suddenly become a very heavy user of the free app you'll get something like a request /demand ...

Re: why the 'what three words' TV ad is so annoying?

[Populating the word dictionary] could have been carried out by the open source community and the word dictionary would then be open to everyone, but it wasn't, so it isn't. It has been, repeatedly, with slightly different spins on the dictionary, with w3w using DMCA takedown notices and other simi...

I developed a security tool a number of years ago and the company I was working for patented it. The patent was about 10 times longer than the code I wrote, and I barely understood it myself.
