North road bars available from Soma, I think and alloy.
Soma make another 1930s style bar, the Lauterwasser, in steel or alloy.
I've used them on a SA bike, they're wider than the vintage version,
and of course no celluloid covering.

foxyrider wrote: 4 Apr 2024, 6:34pm[snip]

So when did you discover the soaring cost of keeping your bikes on the road?
About 1900.
Pneumatic tyres, and the whole tube scam.
In the old days you didn't need tubes, and your
chain ran in an oil bath chain case and lasted years.
Bracket gear were buried in the bottom bracket
and didn't hang out in open air to get sprayed with road
muck. :)

Re: 9-spd cassette on 7-spd hub - it fits!

NickJP wrote: 3 Apr 2024, 12:13pm I use the Shimano 11-32 9s cassette on a couple of 7-speed hubs with the 11t cog discarded. The 12t cog on those cassettes already has the serrations for the lockring - all you need is a lockring intended for a 12t cog, as the lockring for the 11t cog is too small a diameter to work with the 12t cog.

Here's one of the aforementioned hubs.

The 10s 11-32 cassette is built the same way, it has the 11t and 12t serrated cog.
Now what can you do with a sack of 11t cogs ?

rogerzilla wrote: 30 Mar 2024, 3:50pm At some point you have to "upgrade" because the stuff you want is no longer made. Chains are ok but good quality 7-9 speed cassettes are getting more difficult. Rear mech compatibility was also broken with 11 speed.
My last upgrade was from 9 speed to Suntour 5 speed, solved the cassette and chain problems.
Now quality 4 speed freewheels are a problem, I've a good stock of Simplex rear mechs, 4s,
but only 1 freewheel.

For comparison, pic of Specialized Dolce dropout, which is what I think the bike is.
Based on the gelatin inserts of the fork and carbon seat stays.

almostvegancyclist wrote: 16 Mar 2024, 6:42pm Regarding the gender issue, some people have non-binary gender, so I wouldn't have been able to get ethical approval without including a third option as excluding such people would be discriminatory.
Gender in cycling is different, the categories are rim-brake, disc-brake and fixed gear.
Beware, these are extremely triggering topics requiring STANAG level II safe spaces.

A 1954 Claud Butler New All Rounder, updated with a Suntour VXGT rear mech,
instead of the Benelux Tourist mech, the rear block is Suntour also.

I've '37 Wm. J. Hood Palace Special, it has a Sturmey AF hub,
but it's in bits right now, it needs new races for the headclip.

Just wondering if it's a fairly common experience, to find that "cycle routes",, are routinely defined by motor vehicle dependent individuals', without an intuitive regard for "up's & downs" in the landscape ? As anyone who walks, cycles, or rides will know, on an intuitive basis
Cycle routes are planned by 28 year olds with 5-7% body fat, they ride 56cm bikes with 12 cm stems
and the bike must weight less than the UCI minimum, no bags, mudguards or mirrors are permitted. :)

Re: Replacing fully concealed cables

NickJP wrote: 28 Feb 2024, 6:16am A while ago I read this article: https://www.bikeradar.com/features/tech ... le-routing. The totally hidden cable seem to be almost universally reviled by the mechanics who have to work on them.
But internal cables discourage the punter from working on their bikes,
so they have to bring them to a mechanic.
Part of Mechanics Preservation Act of 1641.

Stradageek wrote: 7 Feb 2024, 8:41am Much ambivalence here. Endless stopping to consult maps on tour can be a bit of a pain so I generally write a list of towns and villages, check the map at the start then follow my nose/signposts. [snip]
I ended up with the same system, look at the map in the evening, write out the town list,
for use the next day. Worked a treat in France where there are town signs at D roads intersections.
not as good in England, lots of intersection without signs.
Still worried about German paratroops it seems. :)

I confess - it always amazes me, even after observing 197,471 examples, that humans can't be bothered to learn enough to manage even the slightest issue within their personal environment. I blame the glossy adverts for the new! & improved!
There is a recent book that blames fire, instead of adverts.

Re: I see no penalty in using a Triple FD where a Double FD should be

If the inner cage won't clear the inner ring, with the outer cage
set to the height to clear the outer ring, you have a problem.
Try it and see, some front mechs have deep inner cages.
A Campy triple front mech for instance, didn't work with a 46/30 double,
for the above reason.
