Re: Another Apple Mac question.

With respect Ian, that's not quite the same as what you said.

But that aside, out of interest, what mac do you have and what's the problem?

And also, you can revert back to a previous version of OS X but it would involve a rebuild from scratch. If you don't have access to any of the previous two OS installers and want one of them, let me know. I've kept the original installers for 10.10 (Yosemite) and 10.11 (El Capitan) along with the most recent combo updates so could host them somewhere for you to download and push to a USB stick to reinstall.

Apple don't get you to do that. With Apple you do a complete backup, do a factory reset, wait several hours, do a complete restore and then put up with exactly the same problems you had before, except now you are a few days older with nothing to show for that "lost time".

At least with Windows a switch off and on again only takes a few minutes.

These days Apple are living of a past reputation for reliability, something their quality has allowed to slip away.

Wut? I don't know if that was tongue in cheek or not but it's quite possible to shut down a mac and restart it without all that.

Glad it's been resolved with a simple cookie clear.

Re: Conti Tyre Failure 30 Days?

I read that page a couple of weeks ago when I was looking at tyres, from memory doesn't he say that the sidewalls are quite thin?

I ended up with Conti Grand Prix 4 Season tyres which I'm very happy with.

Re: Firefox Browser Users Warning! SSD wear and tear

Let's not forget something very important here.

All storage devices will fail. This is absolute, nobody can argue this point.

Mechanical drives will fail
SSDs will fail

As it happens, modern SSDs will probably last longer than mechanical drives.

As far as I'm concerned, data doesn't exist unless it's stored in at least three places, preferably with one of them being in a remote location.

Keep backups, regular backups and make sure you test restore from time to time. Cloud storage backups are cheap these days, I pay less than a dollar a week for an unlimited backup solution and I do a test restore every couple of months. I also have important data in Dropbox and all my data and media (and there's a lot of media) in two other local backups.

Everything happens automatically with no involvement from me whatsoever.

Accept that one day you'll switch on/wake up your computer and the storage device will be broken. Be prepared to work around that inevitable situation and you'll be fine.

Vorpal wrote:For most people, this will never affect the life of their SSD. Drvies have the re/write capacity specced. They say something like 'endurance of 220TBW' (typical for a 750 GB drive).

So, at 24 GB per day, it would take something like 25 years to kill the SSD. Of course, some of that capacity is needed for other things, but it's not something that I would worry overly much about. Something else will die first.

Exactly this. 99.999% of people will never suffer an issue because of this. It's really nothing to worry about.

I'm looking at the video, I see her drive past the passing point and then moving slightly to the left to make more space for the cyclist to get through. In his eyes, she should have stopped. In her eyes, she made space for him to pass.

One of the two parties got grumpy and aggressive, the other overreacted. In this respect, I think they're both wrong. I certainly don't think she should be disgraced for her actions.

Re: My first twenty mile ride!

Thanks for the nice words everyone.

rmurphy195 wrote:Best thing is, when you've done something like this a few times and you suddenly realise you are no longer tired-out when you finish!

I actually wasn't tired out after the ride, I'm quite sure I could have carried on for a good few miles further without any problem but I'd completed what I aimed for.

I bought myself a Garmin 520 with the speed, cadence and HRM sensors last week and went for a ride yesterday to try them out. I was only planning on ten miles or so but was having such a fun ride that I went much further. I did 23 miles this time! I stopped after a couple of miles, paused the 520 to make a change to one of the screens and carried on but hadn't remembered to restart it so lost over a mile of recording before I realised (yes, I've since enabled auto-pause/resume so this won't happen again).

The 30mph top speed recorded in my last ride was a GPS glitch, I didn't get anywhere near that but the 26mph top speed in this one is genuine.

For the first chunk of this ride, I had a nasty wind coming at around 45 degrees from my left side directly off the sea - Naturally on the way back home it was a tailwind and it made so much difference, I was watching my average speed rise and it was a lot nicer (and quieter) to ride. Only a small elevation change again, this was entirely along the seafront with just a couple of climbs up to get to the prom.

Again, no problems with exhaustion but I will have to get some non-cotton shorts because they were absolutely soaked in sweat!

Re: What do you think of this video! Disgrace that woman

Now bearing in mind I'm a new cyclist so I have very little practical experience of this sort of thing.

I say "this sort of thing" but I'm struggling to actually see what the problem is here. OK, she clearly didn't wait at the passing place but she did appear to move over to the left a bit and leave as much room as she could, it looked like there was plenty of space for them to pass.

He aggravated the situation by shouting at her. I accept that she was rude in return but in her eyes, she hadn't really done anything wrong. I think the cyclist was over shouty and handled the entire situation badly. I was waiting for him to say that she's on camera and he'll be calling the police and I wasn't disappointed. At that point I lost interest.

Re: My first twenty mile ride!

Thanks everyone.

Regarding the altitude gain - I live by the sea, I planned my route all the way along the seafront and back on purpose because it's flat!

No problem with wrist ache, I do think it might be a good idea to add some method of giving myself alternative hand positions though. What sort of thing is available for a bike with flat bars? Surely not some kind of drops?

Also no issues with my bum or any discomfort in my unmentionables. It really wasn't difficult and I'm sure that if I'd planned further, I'd have completed it.

I like the look of the Hummvee shorts but they really are expensive. It would be nice if I could find a local shop to actually try them on first, the same goes with some kind of cycling jersey as well. They all seem to be snug fits though and at the moment, I don't have the shape (seriously, I lost a bucketload of weight and have the loose skin issues).

What's next? Probably a thirty mile ride and that might happen this weekend, weather permitting. I'm planning on nailing a Garmin 520 to the handlebars as well. Can't hurt to track this sort of thing and all the associated metrics properly.

Thanks Si, that's interested about the clothes, what exactly should I be searching for please? I'm not even sure where to begin looking for "hi-tech fabrics that look like normal loose casual ware" ;)

My first twenty mile ride!

Not sure if this is the right place to post this so I'll see how it goes. I'm sure if it's wrong, someone will tell me.

I know this won't be much of an achievement for many people here but I'm quite proud of myself. I've not owned a bike for around thirty years but recently bought a bike through C2W (I wrote about this here).

This morning I completed my first twenty mile ride. I set out to do twenty miles, I did twenty one :D

Most of it was on cycleways shared with public footpaths (National Cycle Network #150) so I couldn't go particularly fast but that wasn't my goal. My aim is to improve stamina at the moment by riding longer distances and I'm sure speed will come later.

I didn't get off the bike with jelly legs at the end and I wasn't exhausted, I could have gone further. The only unattractive thing was the amount of sweaty dampness around my vest, polo shirt shirt and shorts. No, I'm not wearing proper cycling gear, I was just in a pair of shorts, standard cotton vest and a polo shirt on top.

Good fun was had and I'm sure my distances and speeds will improve.

Re: Mounting rear Moon Nebula light?

Thanks.
Yes, I see what you mean about the seatstay but surely it's then pointing almost straight up?

The mudguard I have is more of a mudflap, it's a flap that sits over the top of the wheel, not one which goes all the way round. That would have been easy!
